Sabres Place Conor Sheary On Waivers

Despite never filling a major lineup role, veteran winger Conor Sheary was once a lock to stick in the NHL lineup. Those days seem past, as Sheary has been placed on waivers by the Buffalo Sabres ahead of his 14th professional season per PuckPedia. This move will set up Sheary to appear in the AHL for just the second time since the 2015-16 season. His last stint in the minors came with the Syracuse Crunch in the 2024-25 season.

Sheary was a force in his last appearance in the AHL. He scored 20 goals and 61 points in 59 games with the Crunch, despite only scoring 15 points in 62 games and two seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He has become a journeyman across the NHL in his veteran years, with Buffalo becoming his fourth club since 2022.

A move to Buffalo is a reunion for Sheary, who played in 133 games and scored 53 points with the Sabres between 2018 and 2020. Since those days, Sheary has posted a career-high 43 points in 71 games of the Washington Capitals’ 2021-22 season. He most recently notched 18 points in 62 games with the New York Rangers last season.

Sheary will represent a major boost to the Rochester Americans lineup, should he make it through waivers. The Americans scored the second-fewest goals in the AHL’s North Division last season, ahead of only the Utica Comets. Much of that scoring was leaned on young forward Konsta Helenius, who scored 63 points in as many games before being promoted to the NHL. Sheary will be the top option to fill the hole Helenius left in the minors, though Rochester may need to look towards Trevor Kuntar to step in at center.
