Sabres sign Mason Geertsen to two-year contract
Walter Tychnowicz-USA TODAY Spor

The Buffalo Sabres added some defensive depth on the opening day of NHL Free Agency, signing blueliner Mason Geetsen to a two-year contract, worth $775,000 at the NHL level and $425,000 in the minors.

The 30-year-old has played just 25 regular-season games in the NHL, spending the majority of his professional career in the AHL. However, while he has yet to record his first NHL point, he accrued 77 penalty minutes during that span, which all occurred with the New Jersey Devils during the 2021-22 campaign.

Last season, Geersten appeared in 31 games with the Vegas Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights, and posted five assists, bringing his AHL total points tally to 69 in 447 regular-season contests.

Previously, he has also skated for the AHL affiliates of the Columbus Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils.

He has also spent time in the ECHL, where he helped the Colorado Eagles win the 2017 Kelly Cup Championship, after playing nine regular-season games and 19 playoff games, during which he scored a goal and added eight assists, marking one of the more productive spells of his professional career.

Before turning pro, the native of Drayton Valley, Alberta, played six seasons in the Western Hockey League, splitting his time with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Vancouver Giants, before being selected 93rd overall in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Draft.

Away from the rink, Geersten announced that he was in remission from cancer, following a diagnosis of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in November 2023, which forced him to take some time away from professional hockey.

Now, he is likely to join the Rochester Americans, as they hope to take the next steps after making the third of five rounds in the AHL’s Calder Cup Playoffs in 2024-25.
