One of the important pieces on the Colorado Avalanche blueline is set to re-join the team after a near months-long absence.

On Friday, the league announced that defenseman Samuel Girard has been cleared to practice after receiving care from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.

A release said that “Girard is now entering the follow-up care phase of his treatment, but is not allowed to return to game action.” Therefore, he is still out indefinitely until further notice.

The notice also stated “Girard’s care continues to be administered pursuant to the player assistance program.”

The 25-year-old entered the program in late November, citing the was suffering from severe anxiety and depression that led to alcohol abuse. He has been out of the lineup since Nov. 18.

Girard played 15 games prior to entering the program, scoring a goal and an assist with the Avs. In 431 career games, the Quebec native has totaled 185 points, including a career-high 37 points during the 2022-23 season. Girard has also scored 22 points 51 career playoff games, though he played just seven games during Colorado’s run to the Stanley Cup in 2022.

The former Nashville Predators’ offensive touch has been noticeable since posting 34 points during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season, nearly equaling that mark the following season.

He rejoins an Avalanche (20-11-2) team that is fighting for the top spot in the Central Division, having won four of their last six games. Coming into Friday’s action, Colorado’s 42 points is level with the Dallas Stars, with the Winnipeg Jets nipping at their heels.

The Avs will be hosting the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.
