The Edmonton Oilers will begin their preperation for the 2026-27 NHL season well short of full strength.

On Wednesday, the Oilers announced that forwards Matt Savoie and Mattias Janmark, along with defenseman Alec Regula and goaltender Frederik Andersen, are expected to miss the team’s training camp in September.

According to a release from the team, Savoie and Andersen are still recovering from injuries sustained during offseason training. Janmark is recovering from surgery, suspected to be for a shoulder injury, he underwent in early March, while Regula is recovering from a procedure performed shortly after the end of last season.

Of the four expected absentees, the most significant player is probably Andersen. Edmonton signed the 36-year-old netminder to a one-year deal worth up to $2.8 million on July 1. He is expected to combine with Tristan Jarry to form a tandem in net for the Oilers. Last season, Andersen went 16-14-5 in 35 starts for the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, posting a .874 save percentage and a 3.05 goals-against average. He then went 13-2 with a .910 SV% and a 1.89 GAA in 16 playoff starts before ceding the net to Brandon Bussi midway through the Stanley Cup Final.

Savoie, 22, is coming off his first full-time NHL season, in which he notched 18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points in all 82 regular season games. He then had no goals and an assist during Edmonton’s six-game, first-round playoff loss to the Anaheim Ducks.

Janmark, 33, had just a goal and seven assists for eight points in 43 games for the Oilers last season.

Regula, 26, split last season between the Oilers and the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors. In 29 games with Edmonton, he had no goals and three assists while averaging about 14 and a half minutes of ice time.
