Saying goodbye to Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Even though the news wasn’t at all surprising, Oscar Klefbom’s retirement was officially announced yesterday, and I’d be lying if I wasn’t a little bit sad to see that once promising chapter in Oilers history finally limps over the finish line.

Sometimes life’s not fair, and that’s how I’d categorize the raw deal the Oilers got dealt when it came to Klefbom’s body falling apart despite being in his 20s. Klefbom last played hockey on August 7th, 2020, when Edmonton lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup playoffs’ qualifying round, and we haven’t seen our handsome prince since.

Frankly, the Oilers didn’t get enough sympathy for losing Klefbom to injury as young as he was. When you think about it, Edmonton lost a quality pairing of Klefbom-Larsson for no return at all, and I don’t think I’m talking out of school when I say that hole put them back a long way. Regardless, when the body screams “Uncle” then what can you really do about it?

A couple of weeks back, we shared an interview with Klefbom by our friend Rasmus Kågström. While you could tell that Klefbom was at peace with his decision, that didn’t mean he had to like the way things ended.

“It was a choice I made. I talked to Edmonton about wanting to keep a very low profile about what would happen and how the situation was. They were completely fine with that. From my side, it was also because I found it so hard to talk about it. I am very satisfied with my career. I am just grateful that I got the chance to play as many games as I did—even though I was injured. I got a lot of trust and got to be part of a fantastic journey. There are really two sides to the coin—for even though I am grateful, I would have liked to be here today. On the ice. As a player. I am 31 years old and itching to get back. I am fresh enough that I want to go out and hit Joel Eriksson Ek down in the corner. I don’t feel old enough to sit at home and enjoy a retired life.”

As a 39-year-old blogger with lower-back issues, I can absolutely understand how frustrating it can be to want to do things but not be capable of executing as well as you’d like. One can only imagine how frustrating these last four years have been for Klefbom to sit back and watch, knowing how much his team would have loved to have him but that his body wouldn’t allow it to happen. Pro sports are a cruel mistress, and Klefbom’s shoulder falling off during his prime is a fine example. Pain.

Being an Oilers fan can be a painful experience, and I would certainly include Klefbom being lost to injury when we needed him most to be another chapter in that same story. That said, complaining about the past and whining that losing Klefbom was an unfair move by the Hockey Gords accomplishes nothing, so I want to wrap up this article with some of my favourite memories of the

GOODBYE OLD FRIEND

While there’s little doubt that bad teams and injuries overshadowed the bulk of Klefbom’s time in Edmonton, he was involved in some huge moments once the club started to turn itself around. There is no better example than this forgotten moment of Klefbom scoring the first Oilers playoff goal in a decade.

That playoff goal wasn’t the biggest one he scored, though. How can you not remember this third period tying goal that he scored against the San Jose Sharks? For this baby, just uttering the word “PING” is usually enough for any of us to remember how things played out.

Speaking of goals, how could we forget that Klefbom’s lone healthy season with the Oilers was also his most productive? In the 94 games he played in 2016-17 — regular season and playoffs — Klefbom produced 14 goals, which was a total we hadn’t seen by a defenceman in a while to that point. At the time, I remember thinking that he would be an absolute stud on the blue line for the next decade or more, and it’s a real bummer to know how things played out with the benefit of hindsight.

If we’re talking goals, I should probably include his first NHL goal, right? Of course. Handsome devil.

And finally, we’re Oilersnation, after all, and sometimes that means we run jokes into the ground for years at a time. That was, of course, the case with Oscar Klefbom’s abs. As a founding member of the Swedish All-Abs Team, we used the following picture of Klefbom no less than 200x on this site over the years, and I want to thank him for the strict dieting and core workouts needed to provide us this meme. It was indeed a blessing.

In conclusion, the official news of Klefbom’s retirement wasn’t at all surprising, but I still think it was sad. This dude has all kinds of potential and skill that were desperately needed around these parts, and having him vanish due to injury was a swift kick to the shin that none of us needed.

Sometimes, I wonder where the Oilers would have been if Klefbom’s shoulder issues hadn’t robbed him (and us) of the NHL career he probably deserved. Yet, the story went differently. Instead, we got a player who faded away because his body wouldn’t play nice anymore, and that’s a cruel piece of history for both the player and the fanbase. Even so, I wanted to take a minute to write a farewell to a player that was a lot of fun to watch, endlessly handsome, and a massive part of getting this team back into the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

While the end of Klefbom’s career didn’t go how we would have wanted, I still appreciate everything he did while he was here. All the best, Oscar. Here’s to a fantastic retirement, and it’s my hope that you’re still maintaining those abs. Sail on, good sir. We’ve missed and will continue to miss ya.

Bruins, Oilers Rumored to Talk Small Trade That Could Turn Big

The Edmonton Oilers could be exploring a potential trade with the Boston Bruins involving former first-round pick Fabian Lysell, according to hockey analyst Dominic Tiano. Selected 21st overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, Lysell was once considered a pure offensive talent with Top-6 potential. However, after three AHL seasons with declining point production and no NHL debut for Boston, the Bruins may be willing to move him. David Staples of the Edmonton Journal transcribed comments in a recent podcast that included, “Rumours are swirling the Bruins may be dangling Lysell in a trade with the Edmonton Oilers… Dominic Tiano suggested in my Discord (digital chat) that the Bruins and the Oilers have been in conversations.” Staples isn’t denying the report, or necessarily doubting the validity of the source. That said, he’s not sure the trade makes sense for the Oilers. Lysell’s development has been uneven. Boston coach Joe Sacco praised his 200-foot game and off-puck play but also emphasized the need for him to develop more as a complete player. While still young, unfortunately, Lysell’s size and role could be redundant for the Oilers, who already have similar forwards in Ike Howard, Matt Savoie, and Andrew Mangiapane. Could This Turn Into a Much Bigger Trade? What might be the most interesting part of this rumor is the potential that a small trade could turn big. Staples notes that possible trade scenarios discussed by the Bruins Diehards podcast include sending Lysell in exchange for prospects like Savoie or Vasily Podkolzin. As part of the package, Edmonton could also include someone like Beau Akey or Quinn Hutson, while getting Boston’s AHL goalie Michael DiPietro back in a larger deal. Clearly, all of this is just talk and there isn’t anything imminent. However, the Bruins and Oilers seemed to be loosely linked in trade rumors this off-season and there might be something here. Whether it happens during the off-season or gets revisited during the season, this could be a storyline worth watching.

Former Green Bay Packers RB to miss entire 2025 NFL season due to injury

The Green Bay Packers are dealing with some concerning injuries to significant members of their roster. As their fans are well aware, the Packers have seen multiple wide receivers projected to be at the top of the depth cart go down during training camp with various injuries. Christian Watson, of course, has not been practicing all offseason as he is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. In addition to him, the Packers also played their previous preseason game without Romeo Doubs (back), Jayden Reed (foot) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf). And while Doubs returned to practice this week, Reed and Wicks remain out. Elsewhere around the NFL, other teams are dealing with injuries of their own, and some involve players that are former Packers. Former Green Bay Packers running back Patrick Taylor is out for the 2025-26 NFL season One of these players is former Packers running back Patrick Taylor, who played in Green Bay from 2021-2023. An undrafted free agent who often filled in as Green Bay’s third running back, he accumulated 261 rushing yards and a touchdown in his three seasons with the Packers. He found himself out of a job when the Packers revamped their running back room before the 2024 NFL season. Taylor ended up with the San Francisco 49ers last season and had the best year of his career with 183 rushing yards and a touchdown while appearing in 13 games. He will not be playing any games this season as San Francisco just put him on season-ending injured reserve: NFL teams can only have so many players on an injured reserve list. Interestingly, Taylor’s injury led to the 49ers to release another former Packer, wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, who was placed on injured reserve last week. In order to release an injured player, teams and that player must come to an injury settlement, which St. Brown received. He is now free to sign with any team in the NFL should he be able to pass a physical.

LeBron James Gives Himself a New Nickname Amid Newest Addiction

LeBron James is addicted ... to golf, that is. The Los Angeles Lakers star said so himself, and he continues to show just how obsessed he is with the sport. After the Lakers' failed playoff run during the 2024-25 season, James has spent a huge chunk of his offseason playing golf. There have been a lot of comments about James' golf swing, with Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum even saying he needs to "loosen up a little bit." LeBron James Gives Himself a New Nickname Sure enough, James has shown significant improvement as he continues to work on his golf game. In fact, James was on a golf course along with plenty of friends recently, when he produced a highlight moment. Apparently, he pulled off a bunker chip-in, which his friends attested to. The Lakers forward called it "the highlight of the weekend" for him, adding that he "couldn't believe it." James was so hyped that he even gave himself a new nickname. "I mean call me LeScottie Scheffler," he wrote on his Instagram Stories, referencing the PGA Tour's current No. 1 golfer, Scottie Scheffler. It remains to be seen how Scheffler will react to James' self-proclaimed nickname, although it's not a surprise why the four-time NBA champion was inspired by the golf star. LeBron James' 'Cold' Message for Scottie Scheffler It's worth noting that James was among the first to celebrate Scheffler's latest victory at the BMW Championship. In the contest, Scheffler entered the final round trailing Robert MacIntyre by four strokes. However, he turned things around on the last day of the competition in Maryland and secured a two-shot victory to claim his fifth tournament title this year. During Scheffler's comeback, James was tuned in and even posted on X how "crazy" his performance was. "Scheffler so damn COLD out there!!" James exclaimed. James is obviously a huge fan of Scheffler, and with the Lakers star not afraid to show it, maybe fans would see the real Scottie Scheffler play LeScottie Scheffler in the future.

Aaron Judge seemed annoyed with Aaron Boone over troubling health update

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone offered a concerning update on Tuesday about Aaron Judge's recovery from an elbow injury, and the slugger did not seem thrilled about that. Judge returned to the Yankees' lineup on Aug. 5 following a 10-day stint on the injured list. The two-time American League MVP had a flexor strain in his throwing elbow, and he has been slotted in as New York's designated hitter since he returned. In an interview with WFAN on Tuesday morning, Boone said he does not believe that Judge will get back to "throwing like he normally does" at any point for the remainder of the season. Judge was caught off guard by his manager's remarks. Prior to Tuesday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Judge told reporters that he is unsure of why Boone provided the pessimistic update. "I don’t know why he said that. He hasn’t seen me throw the past two weeks," Judge said. "I’m pretty confident I’ll get back to that.” Boone later admitted that he may have misspoken during the WFAN interview. Many were surprised by the apparent disconnect between Judge and Boone. It is possible that what Boone said in the initial interview was accurate and Judge did not want that information to be made public. The alternative is that Boone is not completely up to speed on his best player's recovery from an injury, which would be a bad look for the manager. Judge is batting .333 with 39 home runs and 91 RBI this season. His bat is far more important to the Yankees than his glove, but he has struggled at the plate a bit since returning. Judge is batting just .229 with a .429 slugging percentage in 11 games since he came off the injured list.
