The Jets lost by one goal to the Stars and Mikko Rantanen, and despite the close game, head coach Scott Arniel called out his team following the tough contest.
Winnipeg Jets coach Scott Arniel was direct following his team's 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Wednesday night.
He did not appreciate the way the Jets played, and informed reporters that they played the game like a regular-season contest instead of a playoff battle.
'That did not feel like a playoff game in Game 1 in Round 2. That felt like game 45 in the middle of December.'- Scott Arniel
Arniel also said the team must play the right way as a team and not depend on previous wins to secure games.
'Obviously we know the high we're on coming off that St. Louis game but man this is the playoffs,' Arniel said. 'That's a game, no matter how you start,... It's one of those ones that there's a way we have to play as a group, and that's not how we played tonight.'
The Jets started the second period with a goal by Nino Niederreiter, but momentum shifted quickly as Mikko Rantanen replied with a natural hat trick for Dallas.
He tied it at 8:43 on a poke shot, deflected in the go-ahead goal, and scored on a power play off a deflection to put his team ahead 3-1.
Mark Scheifele, back from injury, scored on a rebound in the slot to narrow the gap to one, but the Stars clamped down defensively after that.
Vezina Trophy finalist Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves but gave up all three Dallas goals in a one-sided eight-minute stretch of the second period.
His post-season inconsistency continues, off a shaky first-round series against St. Louis in which he had a 3.85 goals-against average.
Rantanen has 14 points in his last four games and is on a roll by factoring in on 12 consecutive Stars' goals, a new NHL playoff record.
Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger also delivered in supporting his team with 30 saves. The Jets will attempt to get back on their feet for Game 2 Friday evening in Winnipeg.
