
The Detroit Red Wings entered tonight with no first-round picks. Then the 23rd overall pick came up, and the Red Wings made a trade and sent goalie Sebastian Cossa to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for the pick. The Red Wings selected forward JP Hurlbert from the Western Hockey League.

Cossa’s days for the Red Wings became numbered when Michal Postava got the net for the Grand Rapids Griffins, along with Trey Augustine, now in the pipeline. The Red Wings drafted Cossa 15th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft. He made his debut in a relief role, picking up a win, stopping 12 of the 14 shots he faced last season. In 39 games this season, he went 26-8-4 with a 2.33 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage, and five shutouts. He finished fifth in the AHL in goals-against average, sixth in save percentage, and second in shutouts. In four seasons with the Griffins, he appeared in 123 games, going 70-33-18 with a 2.46 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and eight shutouts. In 11 playoff games, he went 5-6-0 with a 3.04 goals-against average and a .893 save percentage.
Hurlbert, in 68 games this past season, had 97 points to finish fourth in the WHL. He had 42 goals and 55 assists. Hurlbert was a +13 with nine power-play goals, a shorthanded goal, and four game-winning goals. In the four playoff games, he had a goal and two assists.
