Several Injuries Cause Concerns Around Olympic Hockey Rosters

Since Olympic rosters were announced, it’s been an uncomfortably rough stretch for several high-profile players selected to represent their countries. In just a matter of days, Bo Horvat, Seth Jones, Devon Toews, and Tom Wilson have all gone down with injuries, putting teams — and Olympic decision-makers — in a spot where they might have to start thinking about their backup plans.

So far, nothing sounds too serious from the injuries that have occurred, but it’s a clear indication that no roster is set in stone.

The most concerning moment came in Colorado, where Devon Toews was forced to leave the game after crashing hard into the boards legs-first following a trip from Nikolaj Ehlers. Toews remained on the ice for an extended period before exiting. Ehlers later said he didn’t believe he made contact, calling the play “dangerous.” Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour also addressed the incident postgame, though the focus quickly shifted to Toews’ status.

There was more positive news elsewhere. According to Pierre LeBrun, Bo Horvat’s injury is not considered serious and is not expected to impact his Olympic availability. Islanders head coach Patrick Roy confirmed Horvat skated on his own Saturday morning, calling his progress encouraging even if a return timeline remains unclear.

Seth Jones also avoided worst-case fears after leaving the Winter Classic early when he was struck by a puck. Elliotte Friedman reported there is no indication of a long-term issue, and Jones is listed as questionable against Colorado.

Tom Wilson’s situation bears watching. The Capitals forward exited after falling awkwardly on his right leg following a heavy reverse hit from Connor Murphy . Head coach Spencer Carbery said the injury does not appear overly serious, while teammates emphasized Wilson’s importance. Leading Washington with 22 goals and 42 points, Wilson was just named to Team Canada’s roster.

With injuries piling up so soon after roster announcements, questions naturally follow. If setbacks linger, could opportunities open for players like Adam Fox, Connor Bedard, or Matthew Schaefer? For now, teams wait — and hope this run of bad Olympic timing is nearly over.
