Sharks icon Patrick Marleau announces retirement after 23 seasons

The man who's played more games in NHL history than any other skater has taken the ice for the final time.

Marleau spent nearly his entire career with the San Jose Sharks after being selected by the franchise with the second overall pick in 1997. The 42-year-old's first tenure with the club lasted through the 2016-17 season before he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs in July 2017. He was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in June 2019, signed back with the Sharks in October 2019, was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in February 2020 and finally signed back with his original team in October 2020.

Marleau played 56 games for the Sharks in 2020-21, recording four goals and five assists in what was his last active season. He led the NHL in games played four times and appeared in all 82 regular season contests a whopping 11 times.

A native of Aneroid, Saskatchewan, Marleau broke Hall-of-Famer Gordie Howe's record of 1,767 games played on April 20, 2021. Marleau is the Sharks' all-time leader in goals (522), points (1,111), games played (1,607), power-play goals (163), short-handed goals (17) and game-winning goals (101).

He also won a pair of Olympic gold medals with Team Canada in 2010 and 2014 and won a World Championship with the Canadiens in 2003 and a World Cup championship in 2004. Marleau was a three-time All-Star and was twice nominated for the Lady Byng Trophy.
