The San Jose Sharks were without two of their defenseman at Wednesday’s practice, and head coach Ryan Warsofsky provided an update on their status.

Swedish defensemen Timothy Liljegren and John Klingberg are both out on a day-to-day basis, Liljegren with an upper-body injury and Klingberg with a lower-body injury, Warsofsky told a group of reporters including NHL.com correspondent Max Miller.

Both players suffered injuries during Tuesday night’s loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Sharks fell 5-1, as they faded down the stretch. Liljegren skated a total of 20:48 across 28 shifts while Klingberg made it 17:06 on 23 shifts.

Liljegren is in the midst of his second season as a member of the Sharks after being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs prior to last season. Last year, he put up 17 points in 62 games played while skating to a minus-25 rating.

The right-shot defender currently makes $3 million per year, and he’s slated to be an unrestricted free agent upon the conclusion of this season.

Klingberg was a key offseason addition on a one-year, $4 million contract by general manager Mike Grier to provide both veteran experience and offensive upside to the blue line. The 33 year old has 418 points in his 647-game career, and he has gotten off to a strong start in the Bay Area with a goal and an assist in his first three appearances.

According to Warsofsky, both players are questionable ahead of Friday night’s game against the Utah Mammoth in Salt Lake City.

San Jose is off to an 0-1-2 start after picking up points in each of their first two games against the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks, both overtime losses.

With a talented young nucleus made up of standout forwards like Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith and Michael Misa, the Sharks are looking to turn the corner after spending years in the basement of the league.
