Sharks Name Macklin Celebrini Captain

The San Jose Sharks have named young superstar Macklin Celebrini as their next captain. Celebrini will become the 14th captain in Sharks history one year after he secured the team’s single season scoring record at the age of 19. He is also San Jose’s first captain since the end of Logan Couture’s playing career in 2023-24.

Celebrini is an obvious choice for San Jose’s captaincy, despite his young age. He proved his ability to glue a young lineup together last season, showing clear chemistry with other burgeoning Sharks like Will Smith and Igor Chernyshov. More than that, Celebrini was a true all-situations star, even making spot appearances on San Jose’s penalty-kill. He recorded 53 shot blocks and hits, as well as a 48.6 faceoff percentage on a team-leading 1,285 faceoffs.

There was simply nothing Celebrini couldn’t do in his breakout season. He became just the fifth player to score at least 45 goals in a teenage season, joining Wayne Gretzky, Jimmy Carson, Dale Hawerchuk, and Steven Stamkos – the only other one to pull off the feat since 2000. Only two other players have scored at least 115 points in a teenage season – Gretzky and Sidney Crosby. Fittingly, both players were also named team captain soon at a young age.

Historic scoring is nothing new for Celebrini, though. He has dominated every level of play that he has appeared in, dating back to his first year of junior hockey. Celebrini scored 46 goals and 86 points with the Chicago Steel in his sole season of USHL hockey. He was unanimously named the USHL’s ‘Rookie of the Year’ and ‘MVP’ that year. Celebrini followed that with a move to Boston University, where he formed a formidable duo with Montreal Canadiens star defenseman Lane Hutson. With that boost, Celebrini managed to score 32 goals and 64 points in just 38 games. It was an incredible, unrivaled performance that earned Celebrini the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s MVP. At just 17 years old – thanks to accelerated education that made him college-eligible early – Celebrini became the youngest player to ever be nominated for the award.

Celebrini entered the 2024 NHL Draft with no competition for first-overall. He was the obvious choice, having walked a similar path to Crosby in graduating from Shattuck St. Mary’s into a historic junior career. He followed the top selection with a strong introduction to the pros, marked by 25 goals and 63 points in 70 games – the most by a rookie in Sharks history. Celebrinin debuted at the World Championship after the 2024-25 season, scoring six points in eight games with Team Canada.

A strong rookie season, World Championship appearance, and hot start to 2025-26 earned Celebrini a top-line role on Team Canada’s roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics. He became the first teenager to play for Team Canada, in a season where the NHL sent players, since Paul Kariya and Todd Warriner in 1994. Celebrini celebrated that acheivement by notching five goals and 10 points in six Olympic appearances – the second-most by a Canadian teenager behind Eric Lindros’ 11 points in 1992. Like Lindros, Kariya, and Warriner – Celebrini left his first Olympic appearance with a Silver Medal.

His performance at the Winter Olympics made Celebrini a no-doubt addition to Canada’s 2026 World Championship roster. It also made him the frontrunner to serve as captain for the tournament – a title he held onto even after Canada added Crosby to the roster. The Pittsburgh Penguins encouraged that decision, speaking to Celebrini’s perparedness and love for the game in an interview with Josh Yohe of The Athletic.
