The San Jose Sharks have placed defensemen Jack Thompson and Lucas Carlsson on the waiver wire.

Both players are now available to be claimed by the other 31 teams in the league. The order in which teams have priority for claiming players is based on the inverse order of the 2024-25 NHL standings until November 1st, at which point the order will be based on the inverse of the 2025-26 standings.

Thompson started the season on the non-roster injured list after sustaining a lower-body injury during training camp. With that injury appearing to be healed up, Thompson will need to clear waivers in order to begin playing in the AHL with the Sharks’ minor-league affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda.

Thompson played 31 games with the Sharks last season, where he had four goals and six assists for 10 points. He also had three goals and 11 assists for 14 points in 27 games with the Barracuda in the AHL, along with no points in six playoff games.

Carlsson was also on the non-roster injured list, as he was dealing with a lower-body injury after undergoing offseason surgery. He had been considered day-to-day for most of training camp, but is finally ready to return to action, and will do so in the AHL to start the season unless he is claimed on waivers.

Carlsson got into 13 games with the Sharks last season, where he had one goal and three assists for four points. He also had 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points in 45 games with the Barracuda in the AHL, and had two assists in four playoff games.

The Sharks will look for their first win of the season when they complete their three-game homestand to start the year against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday at 7 p.m. PST. San Jose still has a point streak to start the season though, as they’ve opened the year with a 0-0-2 record.
