"The National Hockey League mourns the passing of San Jose Sharks scout and former NHL player Bryan Marchment," the NHL said in a statement Wednesday. "Our deepest condolences go out to his family, the Sharks organization and Bryan's many friends, former teammates and fans."
Marchment, a Scarborough, Ontario native, was drafted with the No. 16 pick in the 1987 NHL Draft by the Winnipeg Jets.
Over his 17-year career, Marchment played for nine different NHL teams, including the Sharks, Jets, Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks, Hartford Whalers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Colorado Avalanche, Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames.
Marchment spent more time in San Jose than anywhere else. After 10 years in the league, Marchment was traded by the Lightning to the Sharks in 1998 for a first-round pick that eventually became Vincent Lecavalier and Andrei Nazarov. Marchment would go on to spend parts of six seasons with the Sharks.
In 334 career games for the Sharks, Marchment posted 66 points (13 goals, 53 assists) and 706 penalty minutes.
Marchment played in 926 career NHL games, finishing with 182 points (40 goals, 142 assists).
His career 2,307 penalty minutes are 31st all-time in NHL history.
