He recorded 33 points in 43 games this season in the SHL, and added eight points in games against NHL talent at the World Championship. Stenberg brings the most NHL-ready game in the class, thanks to his polished offensive skills and attention to detail on defense.
Stenberg joins a young San Jose core filled to the brim with offensive talent. His presence should take some pressure off Macklin Celebrini, as Stenberg is a capable playdriver in his own right.
Stenberg will likely get a shot at making the NHL as soon as next season, and he has the potential to play a significant role on the team.
After the draft lottery, many believed the Sharks would take a defenseman, but general manager Mike Grier stuck to his philosophy of best player available. Grier and company will likely target a defenseman with their upcoming No. 9 pick.
