Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin's careers will forever be tied after entering the NHL in 2005-06 and putting together Hall of Fame resumes as longstanding rivals in the Eastern Conference.
After matching Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record on Friday, the 39-year-old winger received his flowers from all over the National Hockey League — including from Sid The Kid.
"It was pretty exciting. Just that last couple of minutes, when he kept pushing, trying to get that next one. For anyone who is a fan of the game and appreciates what he's doing, it's pretty cool to see," Crosby said.
"I thought he was going to get it last night. What he's done this year is pretty incredible. Matter of time."
Ovechkin netted his record-tying goal in the third period against the Blackhawks. Adding to a lengthy list of achievements that includes the most power-play goals, the most overtime goals and the most goals scored for a single franchise in NHL history.
Ovi has spent all 20 of his professional seasons in Washington, winning three MVPs and leading the Caps to a Stanley Cup title in 2018 — winning the Conn Smythe Trophy en route to his lone championship.
The 12-time All-Star is currently third in the league in goals behind Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl (52) and Toronto's William Nylander (42).
As for Crosby and the Penguins, it hasn't been the type of season anybody in the Steel City envisioned. As they currently sit at 31-34-12 and are in second-to-last place in the Metropolitan Division with a handful of games left on the schedule.
