The Dallas Stars have placed forward Cameron Hughes on waivers after activating him off of season-opening injured reserve per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Hughes sustained an upper-body injury during the preseason. Now that he’s back to full health, Dallas will try to pass the 30 year old through waivers and return him to his usual spot in the minor-leagues.

Hughes led the Texas Stars in scoring with 51 assists and 68 points in 65 games last season. He became just the fourth Texas player to pass the 50-assist mark, joining Mavrik Bourque as the only to do it since 2020. Hughes has been a productive minor-leaguer dating back to his 2021-22 season with the Providence Bruins, when he scored 45 points in 59 games. He went on to notch 56 points in 2022-23, then scored 57 points in 69 games in each of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns.

Across his career, Hughes has only appeared in five NHL matchups. Three of those came with Dallas last season. The other two came with the Boston Bruins in the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Hughes scored the first goal of his career in a Stars jersey but has otherwise recorded no penalties and an even plus-minus. His limited experience will make him likely to clear waivers.

So long as that holds true, Hughes will head for a Texas roster in need of a jolt. The AHL’s Stars rank dead-last in the Central Division with a 2-4-0 record. They have been outscored 24-to-33 and received minimal offensive production from last season’s hot scorers, like Jack Becker. Texas’ roster was lifted by Dylan Hryckowian and Matthew Seminoff. The young pros both received the first NHL call-up of their careers last week. They both stepped into the first two games of their NHL career soon after – but neither has scored just yet. Hryckowian was returned to the Texas roster.
