The Dallas Stars opened their road matchup against the New York Rangers on Tuesday without one of their longtime forwards shortly after the puck dropped.
Tyler Seguin, who has played for the Stars since the 2013-14 season, went down in the first period after an awkward collision with the Rangers' Vladislav Gavrikov.
Seguin, 33, left the ice favoring his right leg and did not return to the game. The Stars ruled him questionable to return shortly after the collision and ultimately decided against bringing him back.
The Stars forward ended his night skating just two shifts and one minute, 12 seconds in what became a 3-2 overtime loss.

Robert Tiffin of Dallas Magazine relayed brief comments from Stars coach Glen Gulutzan, who addressed Seguin’s situation after the game.
“Gulutzan didn't have an update on Seguin after the game,” Tiffin reported. “Said he'll be re-evaluated tomorrow, and they're hoping for the best.”
Shortly after posting that initial message, Tiffin quoted Gulutzan saying, “He's gonna get re-evaluated tomorrow, so we're hoping for good news like we always do. But we won't know until tomorrow where he's at.”
Seguin entered the night with seven goals and 10 assists through 26 games in his 16th NHL season, a stretch that included his 1,000th career appearance on Oct. 30. After appearing briefly in Tuesday's game, he's at 17 points in 27 games.
The forward's departure only added to a challenging stretch for Dallas on the injury front. The Stars are already without Thomas Harley, Matt Duchene, Nils Lundkvist and Lian Bichsel.
Last season, Seguin played only 20 regular-season games due to hip surgery, returning for the final regular-season contest and a playoff run spanning three series and 18 games.
Dallas dropped Tuesday's game in overtime after Gavrikov scored at 1:09 of the extra period. The Stars visit the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
