The Dallas Stars locked up defenseman Thomas Harley on an eight-year, $84.7 million contract, but attention has turned to another cornerstone of their young core in forward Jason Robertson.
According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Stars are in no rush to begin serious negotiations with Robertson’s camp.
The 25-year-old winger is under contract through the end of this season at a $7.75 million cap hit, and he will become a restricted free agent on July 1, just one year before becoming eligible for unrestricted free agency.
LeBrun confirmed that Dallas pondered a Robertson move last summer, but decided to wait. Talks for a contract extension could resume in January or after the season, depending on how his year unfolds.

“Maybe talks will pick up again in a meaningful way in January,” LeBrun wrote, “They could wait until after the season. Robertson is focused on having a strong season and hopefully cracking Team USA for Milan, which could give him a stronger position for extension talks.”
Robertson, who scored 35 goals last season after recovering from offseason foot surgery, is focused on returning to peak form to maximize his leverage.
“The Stars genuinely want to keep him,” LeBrun wrote, “but the escalating salaries in the new salary cap landscape make you wonder what that looks like if there’s a 40-goal season coming.”
The Stars gauged leaguewide interest in the forward last summer, but LeBrun reported that Dallas wasn't really shopping him, calling it more of a market assessment before committing to long-term extension talks with Robertson.
For now, the Stars’ limited cap space remains the main challenge. Dallas has around $17 million projected for the 2026 offseason, but the franchise will need to address the expiring deals of veterans Jamie Benn, Matt Duchene and Mikael Granlund.
Robertson has had a strong start to the season, scoring nine points (three goals, six assists) in 11 games for an average of 0.82 points per game.
