The Western Conference Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars has shifted to Edmonton with the series tied 1–1, but Friday’s Game 2 left behind more than just a scoreline because of a controversial action on the ice.
Midway through the third period, Stars forward Roope Hintz was slashed by Oilers blueliner Darnell Nurse near the top of the skate, where there isn't much protective padding.
Hintz went down in clear pain and was helped off the ice without putting weight on his left foot. Nurse received a minor penalty after a review for a possible major, while Hintz never returned to the game.
Postgame, Stars forward Mason Marchment offered a pointed message when asked about the play, issuing the Oilers a stern warning.
Mason Marchment, asked if the Nurse slash carries over to Game 3:

"Yeah, for sure. A lot of that stuff, you just keep in the back of your mind, and if the opportunity presents itself then, you take your chance. We've got a long series here."
"A lot of that stuff, you just keep in the back of your mind, and if the opportunity presents itself, then you take your chance," Marchment said, per Sportsnet's Mark Spector. "We’ve got a long series here."
Stars head coach Peter DeBoer questioned the league’s decision on the penalty.
"Does anyone in this room think if Connor McDavid gets carried off the ice like that, that it’s not a five-minute major?" DeBoer said.
Captain Jamie Benn echoed the frustration.
"If that was McDavid walking down the tunnel, I would like to see the result of that," Benn said. "We didn’t like it."
Hintz, who has five goals and 11 points this postseason, played just over 12 minutes before exiting Game 2. His status remains unknown, as DeBoer couldn't offer an update after Friday's game.
The Oilers took Game 2 with a 3-0 win, behind goals from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Brett Kulak, and Connor Brown, and a 25-save shutout by Stuart Skinner.
Game 3 is set for Sunday in Edmonton, with physicality now a rising theme in an increasingly tense series, with the match set for an early puck drop at 3 p.m. ET.
