Stars News & Rumors: Jones, Karlsson, Bourque
Seth Jones, Chicago Blackhawks (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

The Dallas Stars seem poised to make a deep run into the playoffs this season and have made some moves that prove their goal is to be a contender. They acquired Cody Ceci and Mikael Granlund from the San Jose Sharks in February in exchange for two draft picks, and it doesn’t seem like their quite done yet. In this edition of Stars News & Rumors, we take a look a the connection to defenders Seth Jones and Erik Karlsson , as well as Mavrik Bourque being listed as a potential trade piece heading toward the 2025 Trade Deadline.

Seth Jones’ Preferred Destination is the Stars

The Chicago Blackhawks are in the middle of a long rebuild and it seems as though they could be heavy sellers at the trade deadline. One player who has recently requested a trade is defender Seth Jones, who acknowledges his cap hit is incredibly tough to navigate around in terms of a trade but wants to work with the team in hopes of contending for a Stanley Cup.

Recently, it was revealed that the Stars were Jones’ preferred trade destination. The Stars have been looking to improve their defensive depth on the trade market and could be a good fit for Jones, but his $9.5 million cap hit makes any trade close to impossible to pull off. His defensive inconsistency also concerns fans, but he does come with some offensive upside. Unfortunately, there may not be much of a market for Jones heading toward the deadline this week, but things can change in an instant.

Stars Connected to Erik Karlsson, GM Shuts That Down

In terms of trading for a defender, the Stars were also connected to Pittsburgh Penguins’ defender Erik Karlsson, who has found himself in the rumor mill yet again. However, these rumors were shut down almost immediately by Stars’ General Manager, Jim Nill.

Karlsson, who is 34 years old, has scored eight goals and added 35 assists for 43 points through 61 games this season. Throughout his career, he has scored 197 goals and added 663 assists for 860 points through 1063 games which comes out to a 0.81 points-per-game average. If Karlsson is going to be traded this season, it won’t be to the Stars, but that’s not to say the team won’t gauge the market and see what else is available to them.

Mavrik Bourque’s Name Dangled in Trade Rumors

The Stars have plenty of assets available to move at the deadline, and one of them is Mavrik Bourque. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, there is a growing belief that the Stars would consider trading him to improve their roster for a deep playoff run if the right fit is available on the trade market.

Bourque, who is 23 years old, has scored nine goals and added 10 assists for 19 points through 53 games this season. He was drafted by the Stars in the first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft at 30th overall after a strong showing in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Shawinigan Cataractes where he scored 29 goals and added 42 assists for 71 points through 49 games. He was considered one of their top prospects entering the 2024-25 campaign and has established himself as a potential two-way star in the making.

The 2025 Trade Deadline is just six days away, on March 7th, 2025. The Stars are expected to be active, and time will tell what they choose to do with their roster in hopes of winning a Stanley Cup.
