An exceptional college veteran has earned himself an NHL contract.

On Monday, Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill announced that the team has signed forward Christian Fitzgerald to a one-year, entry-level contract. The deal is for the 2026-27 campaign, with Fitzgerald joining the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Texas Stars, for the rest of the season on an amateur tryout.

The signing comes after Fitzgerald finished up a four-year NCAA career, in which he capped it off with an appearance in the Men’s Frozen Four with the Wisconsin Badgers. Ultimately, while the team managed to make it to the national championship game, Wisconsin was downed by the Denver Pioneers in a thrilling final this past Saturday.

It was a bittersweet end to one of the best seasons of Fitzgerald’s collegiate career. His senior campaign saw him match a career-high 16 goals, good for second on the Badgers behind New York Islanders prospect Quinn Finley. The Coquitlam, B.C. native registered 15 assists and 31 points, finishing third on the team in scoring. It was the first time in his career that he hit the 30-point mark, and just the second time he posted over 25 points in a campaign.

His efforts were pivotal in helping Wisconsin rise back to prominence, with the team at times ranking in the top five in the national polls. It was enough to reach the national tournament for the second year in a row and the program’s first Frozen Four appearance since 2010.

The undrafted 23-year-old started off his college career at Minnesota State in 2022-23, helping the Mavericks win the CCHA Regular Season and Tournament championships, advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In 151 career games, Fitzgerald potted 45 goals and 56 assists for 101 points.
