By doing this, Stars get full cap relief heading into trade deadline.
Feel for Seguin, who underwent surgery for a torn ACL. Wanted to return, but couldn’t.
Seguin has missed the last 31 games for the Stars after undergoing surgery on a torn ACL. There were hopes he would be able to return at some point this season, but with the news today, it appears that won’t be the case.
With Seguin set to miss the rest of the season, that means the Stars will be able to use the entirety of his cap hit on other players at the trade deadline. In the past, Dallas would have been able to do that if Seguin was only going to miss the rest of the regular season, but with the new playoff salary cap rules, they wouldn’t have been able to play the new additions and Seguin in the same game.
Seguin is in the seventh year of an eight-year contract with a $9.85 million cap hit. The Stars were around $2 million over the salary cap without Seguin’s salary cap relief, so Seguin being out for the season will grant the Stars around $7.7 million in salary cap space entering the trade deadline.
With the newfound cap space, that now opens the door for the Stars to pursue both an additional forward for their top nine and a defenseman to play alongside Thomas Harley, who has struggled with his defense partners so far this season.
However, if the Stars look for players with term, they will still need to be mindful that they will need to fit these additions under the salary cap next season with Seguin’s contract, assuming he’s able to return next season. They’ll have close to $16.5 million in cap space this summer, including Seguin’s contract, but will also need to re-sign Jason Robertson, Jamie Benn and Mavrique Bourque among other depth players.
The announcement is a tough blow for Seguin, who suffers another major injury in his career. This season is the third time in six seasons that he’ll miss more than two-thirds of a season, having missed most of the 2020-21 and 2024-25 seasons with a hip injury.
Seguin finishes his season with seven goals and 10 assists for 17 points in 27 games.
