Stuart Skinner unbeatable as Oilers blank Rangers in 2-0 victory: Recap, Highlights, and Reaction

From imploding to outduelling a former Vezina Trophy winner. You couldn’t have scripted a better bounce-back for Stuart Skinner.

After blowing a three-goal lead in last week’s season-opener, Edmonton’s starting goalie was relegated to the bench in favour of backup Calvin Pickard when the Oilers played their second game a few days later.

Skinner returned to the crease on Tuesday as the Oilers opened a five-game Eastern Conference road trip against the New York Rangers. With Igor Shesterkin on the other end of the ice, Skinner stopped all 30 shots he faced, leading Edmonton to a 2-0 victory.

It took until just over halfway through the game for somebody to finally open the scoring. The Rangers failed to dump the puck into Edmonton’s zone, the Oilers turned up the ice, and Trent Frederic broke past New York’s defence untouched before sniping a shot five-hole on Shesterkin.

The only time the Rangers were able to clearly beat Skinner came when former Oiler Sam Carrick fired a shot over his shoulder that rang off the crossbar. Otherwise, the Edmonton native turned aside everything the home team threw his way

Late in the third period, the Rangers made a strong push to knot the score. One of their best chances came when Carrick danced into Edmonton’s zone, but Skinner made a nice glove save to preserve the 1-0 lead.

The Oilers were able to add some insurance with just over one minute left on the clock. Adam Henrique helped to force a turnover in the defensive zone, Connor McDavid broke the puck out, and then found Henrique for the easy goal.

Things worth mentioning…

Stuart Skinner was undoubtedly the star of the game for the Oilers, stopping all 30 of the shots he faced for his first win of the season. The Rangers controlled play for large portions of the game at even-strength, and New York had three power play opportunities compared to zero for Edmonton.

Trent Frederic scored his first goal of the season and just second goal since being acquired by the Oilers at last season’s trade deadline. Given the injury he was dealing with last year, Edmonton didn’t get to see the best of Frederic first-hand before he signed an eight-year extension in late June. His game-winning goal against the Rangers was a prime example of the strength and scoring touch that impressed Stan Bowman and the front office.

Jack Roslovic was noticeable in his first game with the Oilers, generating a couple of scoring chances while playing alongside Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and rookie Matthew Savoie. The versatile forward inked a one-year contract with Edmonton last week and he didn’t look out of place despite not playing in the pre-season.

Up next… The Oilers will head to Long Island on Thursday to play the Islanders, who have struggled to a 0-3-0 start. After that, Edmonton will play matinee games against the New Jersey Devils and Detroit Red Wings on the weekend.
