Suggested Trade Sees Maple Leafs Land Flames’ Zach Whitecloud

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a busy offseason, bringing in a new coach and adding a few new players, but their start to the 2026-27 season hasn’t been ideal. They have started the campaign with a 3-3-1 record, and while they are dealing with some injuries to their blue line, the depth they brought in should be able to cover for who is out.

With those injuries, though, it seems possible that the Maple Leafs consider trying to acquire a defender to bolster their depth a little bit, and one name that has come up recently is Calgary Flames’ Zach Whitecloud.

David Pagnotta reported that the Maple Leafs have held exploratory discussions involving Whitecloud. Pagnotta noted that Toronto’s previous management group had interest in him, and suggested the organization could still view him as a potential target.

In this article, we are going to take a quick look at what a potential trade could look like between the Maple Leafs and Flames involving Whitecloud. While there have been reports of interest in Whitecloud, there is no indication the two teams have had any conversations, nor is there any belief a deal is imminent at this point.

Maple Leafs Add Strong Player, Flames Cash In

Whitecloud is a very solid defender who can be a trustworthy player in any team’s top four. While he isn’t known for being a strong offensive producer, he is someone who can be put out in any defensive situation at any point during a game.

In 405 career games, Whitecloud has scored 23 goals and added 65 assists for 88 points. Through six games this season, he has no points.

When the Flames added him from the Vegas Golden Knights, in a move that sent away Rasmus Andersson, it immediately became a win for them for how strong his defensive game truly is.

For the Maple Leafs, bringing in Whitecloud solves any defensive issues they have. Troy Stecher and Nick Blankenburg are solid defensemen, but having Whitecloud playing more than them bolsters their depth and gives them one of the strongest all-around blue lines in the NHL.

The Flames would likely be looking for a defender in return, but considering the young blue line they already have, they could be willing to take one that isn’t quite NHL-ready at this point.

Realistically, a deal between the two teams could look like this:

  • Maple Leafs Receive: D Zach Whitecloud
  • Flames Receive: D Ben Danford, Conditional 2027 1st-Round Pick (becomes a 2029 2nd-Round Pick if Whitecloud doesn’t reach a specific number of games played)

Danford, who is 20 years old, was selected in the first round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft at 31st overall, and is currently playing with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League (AHL). He has some potential if he continues to progress well, but could be a couple seasons away from making the jump to the NHL.

Moving a first-round pick would make any team hesitant, that’s why I added a condition. That just provides some insurance in case of an injury, or his play slipping and him becoming a healthy scratch, but an offer like that likely gets a deal done.

A solid prospect and a high draft pick for a solid defender who is extended through the 2027-28 season makes sense, and if Whitecloud truly is available, which seems likely as the Flames head towards being sellers this season, the Maple Leafs make a ton of sense as a potential fit.
