Team Sweden shared an update on William Nylander ahead of its Olympic opener against Italy. Sweden is playing in Group B at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The men’s hockey tournament begins on Wednesday, and it marks the first Olympic men’s event with NHL players since 2014. The NHL didn't participate in 2018 and 2022 due to negotiation issues and COVID, respectively.

Nylander missed practice in Milan, which raised early concern. Sweden head coach Sam Hallam later eased worries with a brief explanation.

NY Post reporter Mollie Walker reported Hallam’s comments on X. Hallam said Nylander’s absence was “a maintenance thing.” He explained that Nylander felt "a bit sore" after a couple of practices. The team chose to give him an extra day of rest, so Hallam is not too much concerned.

Nylander is likely a game-time decision for Wednesday’s game.

Nylander’s health has drawn attention on multiple occasions this NHL season. With the Toronto Maple Leafs, he has 18 goals and 34 assists, which gives him 52 points in 40 games.

Nylander has dealt with several short-term injuries, and his current issue is linked to a lingering groin injury. He has missed seven NHL games earlier this winter. He returned before the Olympic break and played three games.

After practicing in Milan on Feb. 9, soreness returned, thus Sweden held him out on Feb. 10 as a precaution.

Sweden opens its schedule on Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. ET against Italy. The team will then face Finland and Slovakia later in group play. All teams advance to the playoff round, and the gold medal game is set for Feb. 22.

Sweden expects to make a final call on Nylander late Wednesday. The team will balance caution with the importance of a strong start.
