Swedish League’s Växjö Lakers retire number of former Edmonton Oiler Liam Reddox
Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

A former Edmonton Oiler is officially a legend in the Swedish Hockey League.

The Växjö Lakers honoured Liam Reddox on Tuesday night by raising the forward’s No. 85 to the rafters in Vida Arena. Reddox wore the number while with the Oilers in the NHL and carried it on after leaving to play overseas.

The Oilers selected Reddox in the fourth round of the 2004 NHL Draft from the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League. He spent two more seasons playing Major Junior and won the OHL Championship with the Petes in his final year in the league in 2005-06.

Reddox signed an entry-level contract with the Oilers that summer and made his professional debut with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL in 2006-07. The following season, Reddox scored 16 goals and 44 points playing with the Springfield Falcons of the American Hockey League and was called up to make his NHL debut during the season.

Over the next three seasons, Reddox split time between the Oilers and their AHL affiliate. He played in 100 games with the team between 2007-08 and 2010-11 and scored six goals and 24 points. The rebuilding Oilers opted not to qualify Reddox and he became a free agent in the summer of 2011.

Reddox signed with the Växjö Lakers ahead of the 2011-12 season. The team finished near the bottom of the standings in Reddox’s first two seasons in the league but steadily improved over time and became a perennial contender.

Reddox led Växjö to their first-ever SHL Championship in 2014-15 with 21 goals and 31 points over 55 games along with eight more points in 18 playoff games. Växjö named Reddox the team’s captain the following season and they won the League Championship again in 2017-18.

After spending eight seasons with the club, Reddox ranks fourth in team history in games played with 386, fifth in all-time goals with 72, and sixth in points with 150.
