Sweeney confirmed that Boston will name a captain before opening night. The organization spent last season evaluating its leadership group and identifying players who could step into larger roles.

Sweeney said the Bruins know who sits at the forefront of their leadership group and have a good idea of what they want to do.

The decision should provide clarity before Boston opens the regular season against the New York Rangers on Sept. 29.

Matt Poitras Faces Important Training Camp

Matt Poitras will enter camp after signing a one-year, two-way contract extension with Boston.

Poitras started last season in Providence after the Bruins determined he was not ready to remain in the NHL following training camp. When Boston eventually recalled him, Sturm felt he showed that he belonged at the NHL level.

Sweeney and Sturm also discussed Poitras’ position. The organization believes he fits better as a center, giving him another opportunity to establish himself in Boston.

Poitras is also part of a larger roster question. Sweeney acknowledged that the waiver situation will force difficult decisions. He pointed to Fraser Minten’s experience last season as an example of how an extended NHL opportunity can develop.

Pavel Zacha Contract Talks Continue

Another major storyline remains Pavel Zacha’s contract.

Sweeney said the Bruins continue to have good communication with Zacha’s camp but have not reached an agreement.

The Bruins understand what Zacha means to the organization and want him to remain part of what they are building.

Sweeney said Hagens put in considerable work over the summer and played with confidence during the showcase.

Sturm kept his message simple.

He wants Hagens to be himself and play freely. He also mentioned scoring four goals in a game helps him impress the coaching staff.

With Hagens competing for a roster spot, the next step will be seeing whether he can carry that confidence into NHL training camp.

JJ Peterka Adds Speed and Skill

The Bruins also have a new top-six option in JJ Peterka.

Sturm said Peterka was surprised when he was traded but is excited about joining Boston. The coach believes Peterka’s age, experience, speed, and skill make him an important addition.

Peterka gives Boston another offensive weapon after recording 47 points in 82 games last season. He previously posted 68 points in 77 games during the 2024-25 season.

Sturm hopes Peterka can have a strong camp and carry that momentum into the regular season.

Bruins Looking for More Offense From Their Defense

Sturm also discussed what he wants to see from Boston’s defensemen this season.

He praised the group for doing what was asked of them defensively last season. However, he wants the defensemen to become more involved offensively.
