We have officially passed the one-year mark since the construction of the Calgary Flames’ new arena began.

One year ago, the City of Calgary, Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation (CSEC), and the Government of Alberta broke ground on Scotia Place.

The sports venue is scheduled to open in September 2027, in time for the 2027–2028 NHL season.

Here are some statistics the city of Calgary shared about the project’s construction over the past year.

Removal of Dirt and Materials 308,000 m3
Concrete Poured 8,200 m3
Structural Steel On-Site 770 Tonnes
Concrete Support Columns Poured 50+
Workers On-Site Daily 200+

What we know about the Event Centre

Scotia Place will feature seating for over 18,000 fans and include three outdoor plazas, along with a ground-level concourse that provides barrier-free access to the arena.

Near the southwest entrance of Scotia Place, a large digital screen will be added, enhancing the experience when the Flames return to the playoffs, bringing the Red Lot to the next level.

The event centre will also feature various year-round dining options, including casual dining, a higher-end restaurant, a two-story sports bar, and a food market.

The options will also feature outdoor patio areas.

The event centre will feature a 1,000-seat rink for team practices, which will also be available for community use.

Keeping the team closer to the arena will improve player experiences, as the Flames have been known to host practices at WinSport, twenty minutes from downtown in the west end of the city.

Scotia Place is scheduled to open in September 2027, just in time for the 2027–2028 NHL season.
