The $1.25M gamble that could unlock Dallas's playoff offense

How Nils Lundkvist's new contract could quietly change the Dallas Stars' power play
The Dallas Stars have made a small move that could lead to much bigger results this season, especially with how they use their power play.

Nils Lundkvist has signed a one-year deal worth $1.25 million, and on the surface, it seems like a quiet depth signing.

But when you dig into how Dallas struggled to find consistent offense on the second power-play unit, especially in the playoffs, this deal feels more important than it looks.

Lundkvist was once one of Sweden's top offensive defencemen, winning the Salming Trophy in the SHL and leading all defencemen in power-play goals before coming to North America.

Why Nils Lundkvist's power-play skill and right-shot depth could reshape the Stars' back end

With Miro Heiskanen handling the top unit, the Stars have lacked a true second option on the point.

Last year, Cody Ceci and Matt Dumba rotated in the role, but neither offered the kind of puck movement or breakout speed Lundkvist brings.

After a season cut short by injury, Lundkvist is now healthy and expected to fight for more minutes under the new coaching staff.

According to Reuters, GM Jim Nill praised his ability to move the puck and transition out of the zone quickly.

"He sees the ice well, and he's got a calmness when things speed up,"
Nill said in that same interview.

In a different piece from February's trade recap, Nill mentioned how the team needed more right-shot depth.

"We want competition. That brings out the best in everyone."

Lundkvist might not be the flashiest name, but his ability to unlock entries and create movement at the blue line could spark something new for Dallas.

I really believe this contract is a low-risk bet that could quietly pay off if they give him a real shot.
