To make a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, sometimes you need some strange bounces to break your way. The Buffalo Sabers were the beneficiaries of such a bounce in their Game 4 road win in Montreal on Tage Thompson’s second-period power play goal.
One minute into a four-minute power play thanks to a double-minor penalty for a high-sticking by the Canadiens's Alexandre Carrier, Thompson slung the puck into the Montreal zone. Rather than wrapping around the boards, the puck bounced off a hinge for the zamboni door, then the pad of goalie Jakub Dobes before finding the back of the net.
Zach Benson would add a more traditional goal on the advantage in the third period to give the Sabers a 3-2 lead they wouldn’t relinquish and tie the series at 2-2.
After posting his third-career and second-consecutive 40 goal season and scoring twice in his Stanley Cup Playoff debut, Thompson went seven games without a goal. With goals in back-to-back contests, Sabers fans should feel more optimistic about their chances to join the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Thompson is one of 23 active NHL players with multiple 40-goal seasons. How many of them can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
