The Blue Jackets are a mess, and something has to change
Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman David Jiricek. Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

A head coach resigning before they got behind the bench, star players missing shifts, the future of the franchise sent to the minors and a 40-goal scorer getting healthy scratched. And we’re only a third into the season.

It’s been a tumultuous 2023-24 campaign for the Columbus Blue Jackets, a team that came into the season with playoff expectations and optimism from around the league. But with an 8-14-5 record and 21 points, currently last place in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division, the Blue Jackets are finding themselves in the same position as they were last year: well on their way to “earning” a lottery position in next summer’s NHL Draft.

On Wednesday’s episode of "Daily Faceoff LIVE", Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli discuss the Blue Jackets’ loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night, how miserable it must be for fans, and what can be done to change things in Columbus.

Tyler Yaremchuk: It is a miserable existence right now for Blue Jackets’ fans. They blow a lead to the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night and lose another one. What is going on in Columbus, Frank?

Frank Seravalli: Honestly, this team is an absolute mess. This team seems like it doesn’t care. You mentioned it being miserable for fans, it looks more miserable for the coaching staff, just by listening to them talk, even though head coach Pascal Vincent is only a (third) of the way through his first ever season behind a bench.

Watch Patrik Laine shift-to-shift every game, some nights you’re not even sure if he likes hockey. More than that, you have this incredible crop of young players who you’ve developed so poorly, and no one has done anything to change it.
