The Calgary Flames had themselves a busy November. Overall, they wrapped up the month with a 7–6–2 record after losing to the Carolina Hurricanes 1–0 in overtime. This loss doesn’t define the month. The endless trade rumours, Nazem Kadri’s 1000th game celebration and Sam Honzek’s season-ending injury. There were plenty of off-ice antics to keep fans entertained as well. Don Maloney let fans know that there is no reason to hope for a fire sale. When public perception went south, the Craig Conroy extension announcement came in to throw a little water on the fire. Depending on how you look at it, this may have been an excellent month for Calgary. Is it a glass half full or half empty?
Normally, I like to start with the positive. However, there is no way to avoid President of Hockey Ops, Don Maloney’s interviews. Maloney did an intermission interview with Brendan Parker and doubled down on it with an interview with Eric Francis.
Holy disconnect. For the President of Hockey Operations to get on and say there is “no appetite” for a rebuild and there’s no change in plans or mentality after their abysmal start is beyond tone deaf. Maloney set a new standard. Going forward, this is something that needs to be addressed in crisis comms and public relations classes across North America.
This team hasn’t made the playoffs in three years and is currently a bottom-feeder. In what world, then, are they a playoff-contending team? The rose coloured glasses have to come off. The delusion has reached new heights. For a team that is so worried about becoming the Buffalo Sabres, they’re doing a great job heading that direction.
There’s a new taxpayer-funded arena being built, with doors slated to be opened for the 2027–28 season. Would you rather be tough to watch now and be rewarded with a star player like Gavin McKenna or bring over the “win and get in” mentality that has gotten you nowhere in 20-some odd years?
Much to think about.
After this oddly timed interview, the organization then announced it had extended the entire front office, including Don Maloney, for another two years. General Manager Craig Conroy and Assistant General Manager Brad Pascall have put in the work to move the team forward. Unfortunately, Maloney and Dave Nonis are not anywhere near the same page, and their mentality is likely holding back the team.
Fans have questions about Conroy’s adequacy. When he came in, he had a decade-plus-old mess to clean up. His vision has not changed. He knows the team is going to have to build through the draft and trades. Out of everyone extended, I will say, Conroy has had the odds completely stacked against him. Ultimately, his voice and drafting abilities are crucial to the organization.
Nazem Kadri celebrated his 1000th NHL game on November 5th against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was rewarded with the iconic silver stick along with a $50,000 check for the Nazem Kadri Foundation to support mental health initiatives. Kadri returned the favour with special gifts for his teammates.

Kadri’s one of the many Flames veterans involved in trade rumours. There’s been little movement behind it other than pure speculation. Teams like the Montreal Canadiens have been “in the mix” for a while, but most recently, the Florida Panthers reportedly threw their hat into the mix. As previously reported, the Flames are in no rush to move anyone.
Kadri currently leads the Flames in points with 21. He is third in goals with 5, behind Matt Coronato and Blake Coleman, who lead with eight and Joel Farabee, who has 7. The offence has been inconsistent, but you can almost always find Kadri on the score sheet.
Speaking of Coronato, after being healthy scratched, he has found himself tied for goals with Coleman. He did suffer a bit of an ugly injury at the hands of Miko Rantanen. It was one of those where it looked a lot worse than it was.
If Mikko Rantanen had been properly suspended for his cheap, reckless hit on Alex Romanov, he wouldn’t have been available to deliver another disgusting, dirty hit on Matt Coronato tonight. @NHLPlayerSafety https://t.co/aIaAp2xDCu

Sam Honzek had been one of the Flames’ better performers. He was potentially on the verge of a breakout season. Honzek had finally scored his first NHL goal, and less than a week later, he collided awkwardly with Mikael Backlund. It was another freak accident that derailed a player’s season. The Flames announced he underwent surgery for the upper-body injury and is out for six months. That timeline leads people to believe it is shoulder surgery.
Zayne Parekh also suffered an injury and is out for some time. The team shared that he will be made available for the World Junior Classic, set to take place later this month.

Martin Pospisil has yet to make his season debut. He suffered an upper-body injury in the final preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks. Pospisil got into it with Derek Forbort. Pospisil has a severe concussion history that has led him to contemplate retirement before he even played an NHL game. This latest injury has left fans speculating if this is it for the forward.
Over the last few seasons, trade rumours have dominated the Calgary Flames’ headlines. Is this veteran going to request a trade? Could Rasmus Andersson block another trade? When will enough be enough for Kadri, and he asks for a trade? Does any of this even happen?
October was tough for the Flames, and November was slightly better. It did not move the needle one way or another. No one is pulling a Nikita Zadorov and having their agent announce their trade request midgame. Move the needle and force management’s hand. What’s the worst that could happen?
Will December be a better month for the Calgary Flames? I guess it depends on how you look at it. Are you looking for them to be a draft lottery team, or are you still holding out for the playoffs? The needle has to move sooner rather than later. One way or another, this season defines the long-term success and plan of this team.
