Happy 61st birthday to nine-time NHL All-Star, six-time Art Ross Trophy winner, three-time NHL MVP, two-time Conn Smythe Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion, Mario Lemieux!
Lemieux was the first-overall pick in the 1984 NHL Entry draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins and he wasted no time recording his first 100-point season, doing so as a rookie. He’d go on to become one of the best players in hockey history, posting six 50-goal seasons, lead the NHL in goals three times, assist four times and points six times.
Lemieux led the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 1991 and 1992, racking up 78 points in 38 games en route to those championships.
The Montreal native spent his entire 17-year career with the Penguins, and only Sidney Crosby has threatened any of his franchise records. While Crosby has eclipsed Lemieux when it comes to assists and total points, Lemieux still owns Pittsburgh's all-time goal record by 36 over Crosby despite playing in five fewer seasons (so far).
Lemieux retired (for the first time) after the 1997 season and was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame before returning to the ice from 2000-2006, when he retired for good with 690 goals and 1,033 assists to his name.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. The Penguins boast two of the just six players in NHL history to win multiple Conn Smythe Trophies recognizing the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With that being said, how many of the Conn Smythe Trophy winners can you name in eight minutes?
Good luck!
