The second-best goal of the Calgary Flames’ 2024-25 season came in the first game.

In their first game of the season against the Vancouver Canucks on Oct. 9, the Flames went down midway through the first period as Daniel Sprong scored the opener. Just over two minutes later, Brock Boeser scored to make it 2-0, followed by Conor Garland’s goal just 28 seconds later

Anthony Mantha scored the first goal of the season, but the Canucks regained their three-goal lead with just under three minutes left in the first period. The only scoring in the second came courtesy of Rasmus Andersson, doing so with three minutes left in the middle frame.

In the third period, the Flames pulled out the comeback. Early in the frame, Martin Pospíšil scored to bring the Flames to within one, and on a power play 12 minutes into the period, MacKenzie Weegar tied the game. Not just that, but Jonathan Huberdeau scored midway through the third to give the Flames the lead. With 1:37 left in the game, J.T. Miller tied it at five to send the game to overtime.

That just happens to be where the second-best Flames goal of the season was scored. Pospíšil gave the puck to Connor Zary in the neutral zone, and the Canucks defence gave him the zone. When Filip Hronek finally put pressure on Zary, he toe-dragged it to his right as the Canucks defenceman was flat-footed. Going wide to get around Hronek, the Canucks netminder was aggressive and missed a poke, allowing Zary to slot it into the back of the net for the win.

This win was a tone-setter for the 2024-25 season. Over their first six games, the Flames went 5-0-1 to give them a great start to their season. Toward the end of the season, it was the Canucks and Flames battling for the final wild card spot, so this game had another impact as well. In the end, the Flames fell just short of a post-season spot, but this game was one of their better wins.
