The Flames offence has completely dried up

The Calgary Flames got off to an incredible start to the season by posting a record of 5-0-1. They scored 24 goals over that span. Jonathan Huberdeau, Rasmus Andersson, Connor Zary, Martin Pospisil and Andrei Kuzmenko were at least point per game players.

Since then, the offence has completely dried up and their record shows it. Since October 22nd, the Flames are 3-5-2 which puts them 27th in the NHL in points percentage during that period. They’ve only scored 22 goals in those 10 games, an average of 2.2 per game which is 29th in the NHL.

There are a couple reasons for the goal scoring drought. One is the lack of production from their veteran forwards. Second is their dreadful power play.

Key forwards on the Flames need to be way more productive if this team wants to stay in the mix for a wild card spot. Those players being Nazem Kadri, Jonathan Huberdeau, Andrei Kuzmenko, Connor Zary, Yegor Sharangovich, and Martin Pospisil.

Kadri, Calgary’s leading point scorer from last season, is really struggling to make plays right now. As of November 10th, Kadri is on pace for 43 points over 82 games. And that’s not from a lack of goal scoring. He’s on pace for 27 goals, which is great. It’s the play making that has gone missing. He led the Flames in assists last year with 46. He’s on pace for 16 this season. He’s on pace for his worst statistical output in ten years.

Huberdeau, known for being one of the best passers in the NHL prior to joining the Flames in 2022-23, has four assists in 15 games. That’s a 22-assist pace over 82 games. That’s the worst assist pace of his entire career and it’s not close.

Kuzmenko, who finished last season with 17 points (9 of those points being goals) in his final 11 games, has one goal this season. He’s on pace to score five goals this season. Kuzmenko is arguably the most talented forward on the Flames. Having one goal and 8 points in 15 games is not even close to being good enough.

The process has been excellent for Zary. He is the one player out of this group of six who is consistently creating lots of scoring chances for himself and his teammates. But the production is not where it needs to be for someone as impactful and talented as he is.

Sharangovich is back in the lineup after missing the first seven games of the season. And he’s being asked to play a lot of minutes at centre where he’s not as productive. So, there are built-in excuses for his lack of production. He’s had some good looks and got some dangerous looking wrist shots on goal. But it’s still not enough for the Flames leading goal scorer from last season.

And finally, there is Martin Pospisil who has gone pointless in his last ten games. The Flames need to figure out how to best use him because what they’re doing right now is clearly not working. Pospisil is a talented player. And put in the right situation, like last season, he can thrive and be a difference maker for the Flames. But it’s just not happening for him right now.

The struggles of the Flames most talented forwards have bled into the power play which has been horrific in the last 10 games.

Since Oct. 22, the Calgary Flames have the worst power play in the NHL which is operating at 7.4%. They’re 2 out of their last 27 power play attempts.

According to Natural Stat Trick, the Flames are generating chances in the home plate area in the offensive zone, but there is just zero finish right now with this team.

If the Flames aren’t going to get production from their most talented forwards, then they’re screwed. They will end up being a basement dweller. I don’t know how they will turn it around. Maybe it’s as simple as getting some bounces to go their way? Whatever it is, it needs to happen quickly if the Flames want to stay in the mix for a wild card spot for the entirety of the 2024-25 season.
