The dynasty of the 1980s Edmonton Oilers is set to be featured in a new five-part documentary series that will air in Winter 2027.
While it may seem like a long way away, it is set to “provide an unprecedented look at the lives and careers of these legendary athletes, both on and off the ice,” with “unparalleled archival access,” and new interviews with “the luminaries of the Oilers dynasty.”
The production is being done by actor Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, alongside Score G Production, Fennessey Films, Super Channel and the Oilers Entertainment Group.
Shane Fennessey, the founder of Fennessey Films and son of Kevin Lowe, said in a press release it will feature incredible stories.
“Since the time of this dynasty, fans have only been treated to mere morsels of the legendary stories,” he said. “This five-part series will be the all-encompassing, quintessential chronicle of this team and its seven Hall of Fame players. Having spent my life around many of these remarkable individuals, I can assure viewers that the best stories are yet to come.”
Score G isn’t new to hockey documentaries, and they have produced others such as Ice Guardians and Making Coco, the latter of which Fennessey also worked on. Fennessey was also a producer of the documentary “Connor McDavid: Whatever It Takes,” which detailed his recovery from a major knee injury suffered late in the 2018-19 season.
“The Edmonton Oilers logo is synonymous with greatness, and we’re excited to provide unprecedented access to our content archives and some of the best NHL players of all time — who are central to hockey’s most iconic and compelling dynasty stories,” OEG executive vice-president Tim Shipton said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to partner with this group of amazing storytellers and creators to unearth a variety of never-before-seen content and storylines and deliver it to hockey fans here in Oil Country and beyond.”
The documentary will be directed by Emmy Award winner Austin Andrews, and will premiere on Super Channel.
