Nick Robertson and the Toronto Maple Leafs reached a new agreement prior to a scheduled arbitration case, as the 23-year-old is coming back on a one-year contract worth $1.825 million.
Robertson and the Maple Leafs were expected to meet Sunday, but reached agreement on a pact that affords the Leafs some cost certainty going into the 2025-26 campaign.
The Leafs Nation’s Arun Srinivasan, Alex Hobson and Michael Mazzei provided their instant reactions online, before getting together to discuss their thoughts and ideas about Robertson’s new pact with the club.
Arun Srinivasan, managing editor:
I tend to be optimistic about the Robertson deal. It’s fair value, there’s cost certainty for the Leafs, it further encourages internal competition within the bottom-6 as Robertson will have to fight for his spot. It also serves as a ‘prove-it’ deal to show value to other teams.

This should be considered a win-win deal for both parties. Robertson is still 23 years old and in some senses, it represents his last real chance with the Maple Leafs. He’s a talented scorer and his per/60 numbers often project the portrait of a player who would shoot the lights out in a prolonged top-six role. Robertson will have to fight for his spot in the lineup, as Dakota Joshua and Nicolas Roy will push the incumbents, and he was the odd man out during the playoffs. If the Leafs want to trade Robertson, there’s cost certainty attached to the deal and surely another suitor will view Robertson’s age and excellent shot as attractive qualities near the deadline. Robertson was the Leafs’ training camp MVP last fall and he’s been afforded real opportunity to crack the lineup. Whether it’s here or elsewhere, this accelerates the timeline for both parties and puts any ill feelings to rest.
I’m cool with giving the Robertson experiment another shot now that the Leafs don’t have a bottom six of one extremely sheltered line & one all defense line and might get to play with some guys who are capable on both sides of the puck. I think the Robertson signing was a best case scenario for all parties involved. Inconsistencies aside, Robertson scored 15 goals last season despite never having a consistent line. If he can slot in next to Dakota Joshua and Nicolas Roy, two players who have shown capabilities both offensively and defensively, we might finally see the long-awaited breakout season. In that same breath, it may help his trade value if the Leafs plan to upgrade for a bigger name in the top six, and if he finds a similar fate to past years, the contract is over at the end of the year and he has the option to look for an opportunity elsewhere.
Michael Mazzei, writer and social media editor:
Fair deal for both sides, though there's still the possibility Robertson can be traded.
If he does stay in Toronto, let's hope he can finally make the most of his opportunity https://t.co/0QutaDCUz1

I think the Nick Robertson extension is a fair deal for both sides, with the added bonus that he will remain an RFA at the conclusion of the deal. Now that the Leafs have their last major bit of business done, they can focus on assessing the market for the forwards on the fringe such as David Kampf and Calle Jarnkrok. What I am curious about is where things stand with Robertson long term because this deal doesn’t guarantee he remains a Leaf. But if he does, here’s hoping he can take better advantage of his opportunity because he is entering the make or break territory of his career.
