Ivan Demidov is seemingly on his way to join the Montreal Canadiens immediately, and now we know how his departure from SKA St. Petersburg came to be.
The Montreal Canadiens are having a stellar 2024/25 season, and on Tuesday things got even better as it was confirmed the team will now be adding 2024 No. 5 overall draft pick Ivan Demidov for the stretch run.
The 19-year old has starred in the KHL this season, and after plenty of speculation throughout the year, the team have now announced a three-year Entry Level Deal starting immediately for the former top pick.
However, it wasn't easy to get him away from SKA St. Petersburg in the KHL, and now, the person that broke the news, Marco D'Amico has revealed how it all came about, and that it was an interview he had set up after Demidov's KHL season that broke the news that he was coming to the NHL immediately.
In an interview, D'Amico revealed that the interview was already set up for when his KHL season came to an end, and that in the interview, Demidov was able to reveal that it was happening immediately and he was headed stateside.
In said interview, Demidov revealed that he's looking to play regular season games for the Canadiens, and after a stellar campaign in the KHL this season, he'll likely make a huge impact at the NHL level immediately.
"Most likely, I'll have time to play in the regular season for Montreal. My goal for the rest of the season is to adapt to this new style of hockey as quickly as possible and show what I'm capable of."
This could end up being some of the biggest news in the NHL this season, and given the potential for Demidov and this team, it could be the news that catapults this team back into genuine contention for the Stanley Cup.
