Antonio Stranges has been turning heads for years with a skating style that doesn't even look real, but the hype has cooled down recently for the Dallas Stars prospect.

He was once considered a future star, mostly because of how he moves on the ice. His "10-2" edgework, where he skates almost sideways, is nearly impossible to teach.

You don't forget him once you see him play.

But Stranges' path to the NHL hasn't been easy.

Antonio Stranges still has elite skating, but his AHL development is raising new questions

Since joining the Texas Stars in the AHL, Stranges has had a few bright moments, but his offensive numbers haven't exploded the way some hoped.

He recorded 12 goals and 27 points in 63 games last season, solid, but not eye-popping for a forward who's supposed to wow scouts.

What's holding him back?

Some believe his game is still missing structure. Others say he struggles without the puck and isn't strong enough defensively for a bottom-six NHL role.

That puts him in a tough spot: not enough production for the top six, and not enough grit for the bottom six.

As one AHL coach told The Hockey News,

"You can't take your eyes off him, but you're not always sure he's helping your team win."

Dallas may give him more time, but with younger prospects rising, and limited NHL roster spots, the window might be shrinking.

"He might still break through, but he needs to find his identity," another scout said last spring.

I think fans should still be excited, but it's fair to wonder if Stranges' NHL dream is slipping.
