Thompson Overcomes Nachos vs Oilers, Stays Hot for Capitals

The Washington Capitals held on to win the game on Tuesday night, but in a bizarre turn of events, Capitals goalie Logan Thompson found himself distracted by a tray of cheese-covered nachos thrown onto the ice. The nachos helped distract Thompson on goal by Edmonton Oilers winger Corey Perry and the Oilers rallied, unable to tie the game in the final moments.

Thompson was excellent for the Capitals, but he admitted the nachos threw him off. The goaltender stopped 30 of 32 shots and said after the game, “I’ve never seen that before.” He added that he saw the person throw them and was quite upset, pointing it out to the officials. However, he also took a share of the responsibility. “Obviously, I’ve got to play to the whistle. That one’s on me,” he noted.

Thompson shut the door after the goal, which was important for the Capitals, who only managed 14 shots on net in the game. Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery said he wasn’t sure how to handle the incident and if he could challenge the goal. He ultimately decided he wouldn’t win the challenge as the item thrown on the ice didn’t interfere with the play. “I saw the guy that threw them. Wasn’t too happy. But credit to him. He got them a goal.”
