Now that the NHL season is over for St. Louis, three Blues players have their eyes set on the 2026 IIHF World Championship. The tournament will begin on Friday, May 15, in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland, with the final scheduled for Sunday, May 31.
Robert Thomas will be representing a stacked Team Canada, as always, but will be expected to be a key forward on the ice. Thomas is an all-around player, but his playmaking ability will be a huge piece of the Canadian offensive front. He played 64 games this past season with 25 goals, 39 assists, and 64 points. Canada was placed in Group B, and their first game will be against Sweden on May 15.
Oskar Sundqvist will represent Team Sweden and comes in as someone who can play a physical game on the front end. Sundqvist knows how to use his size to his advantage, which will be needed against very talented teams. This season, he played 52 games with five goals, 12 assists, and 17 points. Sweden will face Canada first in Group B.
Pius Suter will be representing Switzerland in his hometown of Zurich. The Blues forward has the opportunity to play in front of his home crowd, which you can expect will light a fire under him and the home team. Suter finished the season with 13 goals, 16 assists, and 29 points in 64 games. Switzerland will be in Group A, starting the tournament against the United States on May 15.
This is a great chance for these Blues to stay active and play competitive hockey while not participating in the NHL. This will be an early look at what these players could bring next season in St. Louis. For fans, you get to watch your favorite players play on one of the biggest international stages in hockey.
