Three Capitals players who can crack roster and one who could be cut
The Washington Capitals have just one preseason game remaining before head coach Spencer Carbery has to whittle the roster down to 23 players.
Washington's 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday featured all of its goals being scored by players whose roster spots have been secured from the start of training camp.
But there were performances displayed by others over the last five preseason games trying their hardest to impress the coaching staff and avoid being sent back to the minors. With a finite amount of roster spots, that means one starter from last year could be in danger of losing their position.
Here are three players whose efforts can earn them a spot on the opening night roster and one starter in danger of being cut.
Andrew Cristall (RW)
The 19-year old was cut after just one preseason appearance in 2023 but this year he's caught Carbery's attention, logging a point in all three games he's played (two goals, one assist).

"He’s had an incredible camp, played well," Carbery said Friday (h/t RMNB). "He is very much so [making it tough on us], and credit to him as a young player ... continuing to push the envelope and make us consider keeping him in the National Hockey League."
If Cristall doesn't end up cracking the roster, he'll be sent back the WHL's Regina Rockets where he tallied an impressive 40 goals and 111 points last season.
Jakub Vrana (RW)
The 28-year old Vrana was a member of Washington's 2018 Stanley Cup championship team, scoring a goal in the cup-clinching Game 5. He was traded to Detroit in 2021, then St. Louis in 2023 before returning to the team that drafted him.
Vrana wasn't signed to a contract in the offseason but instead accepted an invitation for a professional tryout. So far he's made the most of his opportunity, logging two points and 11 shots on goal in four preseason games (one goal, one assist).

Carbery has definitely clocked Vrana's renewed capabilities, noting Friday he's "showed some of the things that I think would make him special from a speed standpoint" and complimenting "his offensive mind."
The stakes are slightly higher for Vrana compared to the rest of the prospects. Being cut without any sort of contract offer would mean he returns to free agency with very limited landing spots, potentially ending his professional career in the NHL.
Dylan McIlrath (D)
At 32, McIlrath is one prospect that is overdue for an opening night roster spot in Washington. He's been called up from the AHL several times in seasons past, most recently appearing in three regular season games and four playoff games last year, recording just one point but posting an admirable combined +3 rating.
Besides his solid defensive play, McIlrath offers Washington another enforcer not named Tom Wilson. In a rugged Metro Division, Carbery believes that aspect of his game makes him a valuable asset.
"He’s a physical guy, will stand up for his teammates, has a presence about him," Carbery told Monumental Sports Network's Tarik El-Bashir on Sunday. "People around the league know who he is and have to be aware of him when he’s out on the ice."
McIlrath is aware of he's made enough of an impression to earn playing time in Washington before but wants to step up now to become a permanent fixture.

"Everyone's eager to make their best impression be their last and that's what I'm trying to do here," he said in between periods on Monday night.
Sonny Milano (LW)
The 28-year old, entering his 10th year in the NHL, appears to be on thin ice with Carbery, who issued a challenge for him to step up his efforts after being "just OK" in training camp.
"He's got to turn it on," Carbery said Sunday. "[I'm] definitely going to need to see him get into his full regular season game mode quickly."
Milano has only recorded one point (one assist) in three preseason appearances so far, not the ideal performance for a player who was on the fringe of the roster last season.
With several impressive showings from multiple prospects, he is in serious danger of being sent to the AHL to start the season — or worse yet, put on waivers.
"That’s the internal competition ... someone’s nipping at your heels, and someone wants that opportunity," Carbery added. "You give veteran players the benefit of the doubt and let them play themselves in, but there also is a point where we need to see your best, and it’s got to start to get to that point, or else opportunity will show up for other guys to take advantage of it."

Vancouver Canucks top prospect Braeden Cootes has been injured during the World Junior Summer Showcase, which was revealed by Team Canada coach Dale Hunter. The 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase came to a close this past Saturday after a week of competition among some of hockey's brightest young stars, such as Vancouver Canucks first-rounder top prospect Braeden Cootes, who represented Team Canada. Team Canada had a tough time in the event, dropping their opening two games to Team Finland and Sweden by a 14-7 total score. Injuries added to the problems, with some key players out of the lineup, and it hit the Canucks especially hard. Braeden Cootes suited up for Canada's split-squad contest on Tuesday as well as their game versus Finland on Wednesday. He was scheduled to dress against Sweden on Friday, but was suddenly not in the lineup. After the 8-4 blowout loss, head coach Dale Hunter informed the media that Braeden Cootes, Michael Misa, and Henry Mews were all battling injuries and were going to be game-time decisions for Saturday's final game against the U.S. Michael Misa and Henry Mews were back for that game, but Cootes was still out, which meant he was sitting out his second consecutive game. The Injury to Cootes is Expected to be a Short-Term One Luckily, the injury is not viewed as serious and is not of a long-term nature, which can allow Vancouver and their fans an opportunity to take a sigh of relief. 'Light stuff, not heavy stuff.' - Dale Hunter on Braeden Cootes' injury Though Cootes is going to be okay, missing those games was certainly a disappointment, especially since he was hoping to make an impression on Canada's World Junior staff before the final cuts are due in December. Cootes should be good to go for training camp with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds in a few weeks, as the club is set to begin its preseason on September 2 vs. the Prince Albert Raiders.
Justin Fields Called 'Biggest Loser' In Jets Training Camp
The New York Jets opted to cut Aaron Rodgers and sign Justin Fields to replace him during the offseason. This kind of commitment to Fields should bolster his confidence, but it could also place a lot of pressure on his shoulders. To this point, Fields has looked solid in training camp, aside from a scary toe injury that was quickly resolved in July. Justin Fried of the Jet Press recently reported that Fields' training camp may have reached a new low over the weekend as the young signal caller struggled. "Justin Fields put together his best practice of the summer to this point on Friday, completing his first 12 passes en route to an excellent all-around performance. The same can't be said about his showing on Saturday, however," Fried wrote. "Fields finished the day an abysmal 2-of-10 in the air, including a drop from rookie tight end Mason Taylor. "Some of his incompletions were catchable balls, but the Jets' passing game struggles on Saturday can largely be blamed on No. 7. Fields did flash his running ability with a 25-yard rushing score on the first play of red-zone drills, but the Jets would like to see more consistency in the air from the starting quarterback. Saturday's scrimmage was far from his best showing of the summer." Fields is a runner first at the NFL level, but his arm is nothing to scoff at. For most of training camp, his arm talent has been better than advertised, but during Saturday's scrimmage, it just wasn't there. A 2 for 10 performance is unacceptable for a $40 million quarterback who was signed to take over the team. The running game should open up the passing game for the Jets, which is going to need to be the case if Fields is going to struggle like this. However, it's just one day of camp. It's nothing to be too concerned about. Just because Fields lost this specific practice doesn't mean he's heading in the wrong direction as a whole.
Chargers, Cowboys Connected In Micah Parsons Trade Rumor
Micah Parsons officially requested a trade, and every single team in the league should have some interest in acquiring the superstar. A four-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro, Parsons is one of the best players at one of the game’s premier positions and, now entering his age-26 season, should have several years of elite play left in his tank. Players like this usually earn record-setting contracts, and Jerry Jones does not seem willing to hand out that kind of money. With this in mind, Bleacher Report‘s Alex Kay proposed a trade where the Cowboys will trade Micah Parsons to the Los Angeles Chargers in exchange for two first-round picks, a second-round pick, a fifth-round pick, and running back Najee Harris. “Parsons, meanwhile, would help L.A.’s already impressive defense be even better, potentially for longer,” Kay writes. “While the Chargers still have a high-profile pass-rusher in Khalil Mack, he’s 34 and set to play on a one-year deal. With $32 million in cap space, the Chargers could afford to make Parsons their long-term defensive star.” Chargers, Cowboys Connected In Micah Parsons Trade Rumor Micah Parsons may have requested a trade, but as of this posting, the Cowboys do not seem interested in granting his wish. This is par for the course with Jerry Jones, as the owner has a long, detailed history of drawing out these types of negotiations. He did it with quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and history could be repeating itself with Parsons. However, for the sake of argument, let’s assume the Cowboys eventually decide to trade Micah Parsons. If this happens, they should be happy with this type of return. The Khalil Mack trade is the closest comparison to Parsons, and the Raiders parted ways with him and a 2020 second-round pick for two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and a sixth-round pick. This is roughly an equivalent value to what Kay offers in his article, so it’s easy to see Dallas pulling the trigger on this Micah Parsons trade. However, it would probably need to happen before the start of the regular season, as Najee Harris is a part of the deal. While he’s just a throw-in, the running back is currently playing on a one-year deal, and his value depreciates by the week. Would the Chargers Do This? Micah Parsons is a phenomenal player, but would the Chargers give up this much in a trade for one player? While we’ll never know for sure, the Chargers are the type of team that could make this risk. Head coach Jim Harbaugh brought this team to the playoffs last year, quarterback Justin Herbert is one of the game’s top talents, and the roster is loaded with talent. This team may be one piece away from a Super Bowl, and Parsons could take them to the next level. The Chargers have a strong team, but they need an influx of talent to overtake the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West. A Micah Parsons trade could be the missing piece this team needs as they finally look to go on a deep playoff run for the first time since the Philip Rivers days.
Pittsburgh Steelers Stock Watch: Rookie UDFA is on pace to skyrocket up the WR depth chart through two weeks of training camp
The Steelers have managed to get through the dog days of training camp. With the first two weeks in the rearview, it's finally game week for the Steelers in 2025. But before we look ahead to the first exhibition of the season, let's take note of whose stock is rising on the Steelers' roster... Riser No. 1: Rookie UDFA WR Roc Taylor Roc Taylor has been one of the more consistent WRs throughout the entire unit. Honestly, between up and down days from Roman Wilson, and the injury to WR Calvin Austin III, Pittsburgh's most consistent wide receiver not named DK Metcalf, has been Roc Taylor. If there ever was a year where a UDFA WR makes the Steelers roster, it's 2025. There is a virtual unknown beyond CAIII and DK Metcalf. If Taylor's strong camp carries over to "in stadium" performances, as Mike Tomlin would call them in the preseason, he might be a shoe-in for the final 53. Riser No. 2: RB Jaylen Warren Jaylen Warren is clearly the incumbent at RB, but there has been, and still might be, a real shot that rookie Kaleb Johnson pushed him for that role. However, the rookie was indoctrinated to the Steelers' padded practice in camp last week. After losing his Backs on Backers reps to Malik Harrison, he fumbled the ball in a team period via a punch-out from DeShon Elliott. No fumbles alone will keep Warren as the clear starter, but when you add on that he was excellent in pass protection, it's clear that the vet has the leg up. Riser No. 3: TE Jonnu Smith After a slow start to camp with a day-to-day injury, the pads came on, and so did Jonnu Smith's game. He was dominant in one-on-ones, and he's made his fair share of plays in team settings despite running with the twos in 11 personnel or when only one tight end is on the field. The more weapons, the better. With Metcalf and Freiermuth solidified as the top two pass catchers, inserting Jonnu Smith into a flex role where he can be the tight end number two in 12 personnel or a slot WR in 11 personnel will get this offense going where it needs to be.
