Early in the 2000-2001 season, the Colorado Avalanche came to visit General Motors Place in Vancouver. Markus Naslund opened the scoring on the power play five minutes into the game, but Canucks killer Milan Hejduk evened the score halfway through the period.
Matt Cooke gave the Canucks back the lead just over two minutes into the second period, only for Alex Tanguay to tie the game for the Avalanche yet again.
However, Adam Deadmarsh gave the Avalanche their first lead of the hockey game at 15:03, and just over 20 seconds later, Deadmarsh would drop the gloves with Ed Jovanovski.
Jovanovski and Deadmarsh square off in the Canucks end, with both players taking their time to size each other up. Jovanovski goes in for the grab first, which allows Deadmarsh to land the first punch. However, the Canucks defenceman counters with a powerful right fist that stuns Deadmarsh, who ducks down and out of the way.
The two find each other in the clinch, with Jovanovski throwing an upper-cut, which grazes the forehead of Deadmarsh. The Avalanche forward connects on a punch to Jovanovski, who drops his head and, without looking, unleashes a powerful punch to the chin of Deadmarsh, and drops him to the ice.
Deadmarsh’s Avalanche teammates quickly came to his aid, while he was visibly wobbly. With the help of trainers, Deadmarsh made his way to the bench, but would not return to the game. He was later diagnosed with a concussion and would miss the following five weeks.
After the fight, Daniel Sedin would tie the game up at three. Early in the third period, Jovanovski scored what would end up being the game-winning goal, as the Canucks went on to win 4-3.
HockeyFights voters gave this fight a 9.3/10 and unanimously sided with Jovanovski, earning 100% of the seven votes.
