Welcome to our top 5 Vancouver Canucks fights of the 2024-2025 season. With our friends from HockeyFights.com, at #4, we have the fight between JT Miller and Anthony Mantha.
On the opening night of the 2024-2025 season, the Canucks welcomed the Calgary Flames to town, looking for a strong start following their third-best season in franchise history.
You could tell the energy was flowing in this game. The Canadian rival started coming through, as both teams were getting physical early and laying the body. Nearly halfway through the opening frame, Miller tracks down Kevin Rooney in the offensive zone. Rooney doesn’t receive the breakout pass, but Miller still follows through with the hit.
Rooney sees Miller coming, but does not have time to brace for the hit, as Miller lays a shoulder into him. The Flames forward flies into the boards and lands on his right shoulder. The referees blow the play dead, as Rooney is left on the ice in obvious pain. A handful of Flames rush toward Miller in seek of revenge.

The play resulted in five roughing penalties between the two teams, while Adam Klapka was given the extra roughing penalty for his act on Miller, sending the Canucks to the power play.
On the ensuing power play, newcomer Daniel Sprong notched the first Canucks goal of the season. Shortly after, Mikael Backlund took a high-sticking penalty, setting up Brock Boeser to double the lead on the power play. Then, under 30 seconds later, Conor Garland extended the Canucks lead to three.
After yet another Flames penalty, it was Calgary’s turn to get on the board, as Mantha scored on a short-handed breakaway. Boeser would restore the Canucks’ three-goal lead, tipping home a Quinn Hughes shot under two minutes later.
However, it was time for Miller to answer the bell for injuring Rooney.
Miller skates into the offensive zone and finds Mantha, initiating the get-right fight. The two exchange words while exiting the zone, and drop the gloves.
Squaring up in front of the Flames bench, Miller lands the first few blows, while Mantha rips Miller’s helmet off. Mantha then connects on a few punches before Miller returns heavier fists with Mantha’s back to the bench. Mantha gets the back of Miller’s jersey over his head, forcing him to duck and try to shed the jersey, which allows Mantha to land an uppercut. Miller then takes him down to the ice, ending the fight.
Now, Canucks fans remember how the game would go after this. The Flames scored four consecutive goals before Miller tied the game with under 1:30 to go. But despite the late Miller goal, Canucks would ultimately lose the game in overtime.
HockeyFights voters gave this fight a 5.12 rating and sided with JT Miller for this tilt. Miller earned 53% of the 68 votes, with Mantha receiving 25% with 23% of voters believed the fight was a draw.
