Top five Edmonton Oilers overtime playoff goals in recent history
Perry Nelson-Imagn Images

On Sunday night, Leon Draisaitl scored what was shockingly his first ever playoff overtime goal. One definitely would have expected that at least one of his 43 playoff goals would have come in an extra frame, considering he holds the NHL record for overtime goals in a season (six this season) and is fourth all-time in career regular season OT goals.

However, Wayne Gretzky only scored two playoff overtime goals as an Edmonton Oiler, and the all time record holder for the team is Glenn Anderson with three, so I guess it shouldn’t actually be all that surprising.

It was certainly a huge goal (granted, most playoff overtime goals tend to be), but how does it compare to the other 29 playoff overtime winners in Oilers history? Here are my top five choices, whether it be based on the situation or the goal itself, there isn’t really any actual criteria beyond me liking it.

Shawn Horcoff: 2006 Round 2, Game 3 against the San Jose Sharks

Being down 2–0 to the Stanley Cup favourite San Jose Sharks, the Oilers managed to force OT in pivotal Game 3. It took until two and a half minutes into the third overtime period for the Oilers to finish the job, when Horcoff grabbed the Ryan Smyth wraparound pass and knocked it past Vesa Toskala.

The big story here was not Horcoff, but the man who passed him the puck. In the second period, Smyth took a Chris Pronger clearing attempt right in the chicklets, losing three teeth in the process. He managed to battle back in typical Smyth fashion, and thank god he did.

David Desharnais: 2017 Round 1, Game 5 against the San Jose Sharks

11 years after Horcoff’s OT winner at home against San Jose, trade deadline acquisition David Desharnais added his own game winner to the teams’ playoff history.

Desharnais only scored three goals in 31 regular season and playoff games, but his last one was huge for the team to take the series lead in their first playoff taste in over a decade.

Desharnais coming off the bench and just walking down mainstreet to wire home a beautiful Leon Draisaitl feed was just perfection. Am I biased because maybe I was there and saw it live? Who is to say?

Fernando Pisani: 2006 Stanley Cup Final, Game 5 against the Carolina Hurricanes

There is no list regarding Oilers playoff goals that doesn’t include this one, so of course it makes the top OT goal list.

There is a lot to love about this one, as it doesn’t come any bigger than a shorthanded winner to stave off elimination. While everyone in Edmonton was obviously ecstatic about the goal, the person who was probably the happiest by far was Steve Staios.

Todd Marchant: 1997 Round 1, Game 7 against the Dallas Stars

Like the Pisani goal, every Oilers playoff moments list has this goal by Todd Marchant. A Game 7 OT winner is always a classic, but you throw in the iconic CuJo save right before it, plus the fact that this was a true David versus Goliath story in the pre-salary cap NHL, and you have the makings of legend.

Connor McDavid: 2022 Round 2, Game 5 against the Calgary Flames

Connor McDavid’s first OT winner is iconic. After all, a series ending OT winner against your team’s biggest rival is almost as big as it gets. I don’t think there is anything more that needs to be said.

There are of course some fantastic goals missing (24 to be exact). Which one(s) do you think should be on this list instead? Let us know in the comments!
