Top five Oilers fights of the year: #2 — Sam Carrick fights Mathieu Olivier
? Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to Oilersnation’s top five fights of the year, where we take a look at the highest-rated Edmonton Oilers fights of the year, courtesy of our friends at Hockey Fights.

The Oilers’ second-highest-rated fight of the year came last season, when Sam Carrick fought Columbus Blue Jackets tough guy Mathieu Olivier on March 7th.

Talk about making a bang after joining a new team.

Carrick had been acquired by the Oilers just a day before this scrap happened, and it was in the first period on his second shift when he would go toe-to-toe with one of the toughest guys in the league today. Olivier had given the Blue Jackets a 1-0 lead early in this one, and Alexander Nylander had just extended the lead to 2-0.

Both Carrick and Olivier were on the ice for the ensuing face-off, when the latter tied up Mattias Janmark, giving him a shot as Carrick got thrown out of the face-off dot. He slid over to the wing with Olivier, and Carrick immediately asked him to drop the gloves when the puck drop.

The two flung their gloves away,  lining each other up for a grapple, and once they locked up, Olivier immediately started throwing rights, landing a couple quick ones. Carrick would respond with a punch or two of his own, as they continued to exchange punches.

Carrick would land a right that popped Olivier’s helmet off, his best shot of the scrap, but the latter would regain control, ending it with some left jabs that sent Carrick to the ice.

It was a great fight between the two, though Hockey Fights viewers saw Olivier as the clear winner of the fight, with 86 percent of the votes, while Carrick came in with 12 percent. Just two percent saw the scrap as a draw.
