The Toronto Maple Leafs are going through a torrential number of injuries this season. Their lineup took another blow as center Nicolas Roy will be out of the lineup on Tuesday when the Leafs host the St. Louis Blues. Toronto head coach Craig Berube confirmed the news following practice on Monday. All he would say about Roy is that it’s an upper-body injury.
Defenseman Brandon Carlo was placed on the Maple Leafs’ injured reserve on Monday morning, retroactive to Nov. 13th. He missed a practice for maintenance on Saturday and was ultimately kept out of the lineup with a lower-body injury against the Chicago Blackhawks. This is a huge blow to a defense that is already dealing with the injury to Chris Tanev.
At Monday’s team practice, the Leafs’ lineup looked like it had been thrown through a blender. Max Domi was centering the second line with Matthew Knies and Easton Cowan. Jacob Quillian, who was called up from the Toronto Marlies. He was centering the third line at practice between Matias Maccelli and Bobby McMann. John Tavares remains on the top line with William Nylander and Nick Robertson, while the fourth line remains the same from Saturday night’s game against the Blackhawks, with Steven Lorentz between Dakota Joshua and Calle Jarnkrok.
The Maple Leafs are on a five-game losing streak right now. With Auston Matthews, Scott Laughton, Nicolas Roy, Chris Tanev, Brandon Carlo, and Anthony Stolarz all on injured reserve, wins will be tough to get. No team likes to use injuries as an excuse, but these are some important pieces of the Leafs’ lineup not playing right now.
Scott Laughton did practice in his first full session without a non-contact jersey on Monday, since sustaining an upper-body injury during the Maple Leafs’ 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins on November. 8th. However, he will not be in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Blues. Matthews, who is also on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, has not skated with the team yet. There is no timeline for Matthews’ return. He is doubtful to return this week.
The Maple Leafs claimed defenseman Troy Stecher off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. He took part in his first Leafs’ practice on Monday. He is being paired with Dakota Mermis as the team’s bottom defense pair. Stecher has zero points this season, but he is a veteran of 566 NHL games. Hopefully, a change of scenery will do him good. The Leafs are not expecting a lot from him, but they need someone to help stabilize the blueline until Carlo and Tanev can return.
With their number one goaltender, Anthony Stolarz, out, Joseph Woll will play every game for the Leafs until the set of back-to-back games on November 28th (Washington Capitals) and November 29th (Pittsburgh Penguins). Woll just returned to the lineup himself on Saturday after being out for personal reasons to start the season. The Maple Leafs will be in better hands if Woll can return to his form from last season.
