Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray leaves Sunday’s game after collision

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray left Sunday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings late in the first period after being knocked over by Lucas Raymond.

Following a faceoff in the Toronto zone, Raymond attempted to chase defenseman Timothy Liljegren behind Murray’s net. In the process, Raymond tripped and slid into Murray’s crease, knocking the Toronto goaltender down from behind.

Raymond was not assessed a penalty on the play. Murray left the game after just 16:16 of ice time and was out for the remainder of the period; Ilya Samsonov replaced Murray in goal and led the Maple Leafs out of the tunnel after the first intermission.

Murray allowed two goals on eight shots before leaving Sunday's contest. The Maple Leafs initially acquired the netminder from the Ottawa Senators last July, with the Sens trading Murray and two draft picks to the Maple Leafs in exchange for future considerations. The netminder will be under contract with Toronto at a $4.5 million cap hit through the end of the 2023–24 season.

Murray, 28, kicked off his NHL career with back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017. He appeared in 32 playoff games during the team's two Cup runs, winning 22 contests.

Although he remained effective in Pittsburgh during the two seasons immediately following those championship wins, Murray began to show signs of decline and decreased durability in 2019–20, leading the Penguins to trade him to Ottawa. Murray then lasted only two injury-plagued seasons with the Senators before being traded again in 2022.

Entering Sunday’s action, Murray had appeared in 271 games over parts of eight seasons with Pittsburgh, Ottawa, and Toronto, posting a 146-86-24 record with 15 shutouts and a .911 save percentage. Consider him day-to-day moving forward.
