Toronto Maple Leafs Have Signed Scott Sabourin

The deal is worth $700K at the NHL level and $250K at the AHL level. He had been on the an AHL-only deal, but when TVA’s Renaud Lavoie reported the Maple Leafs had waived Sabourin on Sunday, it became clear that Leafs’ GM Kyle Dubas had probably signed the player to an NHL deal. Had Sabourin stay on an exclusively AHL deal, he wouldn’t require waivers.

Maple Leafs fans will probably remember Sabourin from his run-in with Auston Matthews back in the pre-season of 2019. The two got mixed up in things and Matthews burned Sabourin in about the worst way possible; he checked the back of the player’s jersey to try and figure out who Sabourin was. The video went viral at Sabourin’s expense and became fairly popular among Leafs Nation.

Sabourin, 28, made his NHL debut last season as part of the Ottawa Senators’ fourth line. He was as an enforcer but a collision with Bruins forward David Backes knocked Sabourin out for more than a month due to a concussion. After he returned in December, he finished out the season with two goals, six points and 33 penalty minutes in 35 games.
