After years of rumors and speculation, the Toronto Maple Leafs are finally trading forward Nick Robertson. He’s headed to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In return, the Penguins are sending a fourth-round pick back to Toronto.
In 78 games last season, Robertson scored 16 goals and 16 assists for 32 points.
Robertson’s trade saga in Toronto stretches back years. He first requested a move in summer 2024, but when the Leafs couldn’t find a fit, he re-signed on a one-year deal instead. Speculation resurfaced in fall 2025, with then-GM Brad Treliving reportedly fielding calls from Pittsburgh and Columbus.
That October, Toronto tried sending him to Columbus straight-up for Yegor Chinakhov — the Blue Jackets said no. The Penguins didn’t ultimately pull the trigger on anything either, but it was believed their interest remained.
Ice time issues and healthy scratches continued into the 2025-26 season, and with Toronto retooling under new GM John Chayka this offseason, Robertson was again been floated as a likely trade candidate. The Leafs are going after Zach Werenski on a trade, and could be a landing spot for pending UFA Sergei Bobrovsky. Clearing up cap space was a big part of the team’s offeseason plans.
